Associate Solicitor
Job summary
Reporting to the Managing Partner, the Associate Solicitor will work collaboratively with other professionals and paralegals to provide rigorously developed solutions to client problems in a timely and cost-effective manner. The principal areas of practice include Dispute Resolution, Corporate and Commercial Law, Banking, Intellectual Property, Wills, Trusts and Succession, and Real Estate & Construction. The candidate must be willing to put in long hours in an environment that values loyalty, discipline, continuous learning, and growth. A high sense of responsibility is a sine qua non.
Job descriptions & requirements
Responsibilities:
Legal Practice and Case Management:
- Receive instructions for new work and organise assigned matters.
- Conduct document review and fact-finding.
- Carry out thorough legal research and prepare cases, including drafting court processes and other legal documents.
- Prepare for trials, engage in courtroom advocacy, and handle appellate practice including drafting notices and grounds of appeal, motions, and compiling records of appeal.
- Draft persuasive and well-researched written addresses and briefs of argument in courts of first instance and on appeal.
- Conduct criminal litigation.
Client Engagement and Communication:
- Communicate with clients daily (in writing, orally, and in face-to-face meetings).
- Supervise paralegals and junior lawyers.
- Manage time effectively, plan weekly activities, and ensure efficient delivery of assigned matters.
- Cross-sell and up-sell firm services.
- Develop and publish articles on legal topics.
Corporate and Commercial Services:
- Plan and execute assigned projects for timely results.
- Negotiate with clients and third parties.
- Review and draft commercial agreements.
- Incorporate companies using the Corporate Affairs Commission (CAC) portal.
- File changes to corporate entities, attend board meetings, and act as Company Secretary.
- Provide legal advice and opinions in the areas of Disputes and ADR, Corporate Governance, Contracts, Real Property, Intellectual Property, Banking/Finance, and Taxation.
Private Client Services:
- Draft wills and apply for probate and letters of administration.
- Liaise with officials of various registries and government departments, including: Court of Appeal, Federal and State High Courts, National Industrial Court, Probate Registries, and Land Registries
Requirements:
- A Second-Class Honours (Upper Division) in Law from a recognised university and/or the Nigerian Law School (minimum of Second-Class Honours in either).
- A Master’s degree and/or qualification as a Chartered Secretary, Chartered Tax Practitioner, or Associate of the Business Recovery and Insolvency Practitioners Association of Nigeria will be an advantage.
- Minimum of three (3) consecutive years of litigation experience.
- Strong attention to detail and commercial awareness.
- Excellent command of English, with strong writing and speaking ability.
- Meticulous, well-organised, and a rigorous thinker.
- Thorough legal researcher with an appreciation of risks in various contexts.
- Leadership ability and teamwork skills.
- Strategic and forward-thinking mindset.
- Promptness, time-consciousness, client care, efficiency, and financial discipline.
Other Requirements:
- On-site work only.
- Professional dress and appearance in line with the standards of the Nigerian legal profession are mandatory.
Remuneration: NGN 230,000 - 300,000
