Job summary
The Dental Nurse at OHAI Clinic provides chairside assistance to dentists and specialists, ensures high-quality clinical support, maintains sterile and orderly treatment rooms, and delivers exceptional patient care in line with OHAI Clinic’s standards of excellence. The ideal candidate must be organised, compassionate, skilled in instrumentation, and fully trained in infection control and digital dentistry support.

Responsibilities:
Chairside Assistance:
- Assist dentists and specialists (OMFS, Orthodontist, Dental Therapist) during all clinical procedures.
- Prepare dental instruments, materials, and treatment rooms for procedures.
- Ensure four-handed dentistry techniques for smooth and efficient workflow.
- Handle suctioning, retraction, irrigation, and passing of instruments.
- Mix dental materials (impression materials, cements, composites) accurately.
- Manage digital and analogue impressions (assist with intraoral scanning where trained).
Patient Care:
- Welcome and prepare patients for treatment, ensuring comfort and reassurance.
- Explain procedures, post-operative care, and instructions clearly.
- Monitor patient well-being during treatment (including anxious or pediatric patients).
- Escort patients after procedures and support with follow-up reminders when needed.
Infection Control & Sterilisation:
- Operate and maintain Class B Autoclave, ultrasonic cleaners, and sterilisation workflow.
- Follow strict infection prevention and control protocols according to national and OHAI Clinic standards.
- Ensure all instruments are disinfected, sterilised, packaged, and stored correctly.
- Maintain aseptic treatment environments and disinfect dental chairs between patients.
- Manage waste disposal in compliance with medical safety guidelines.
Clinical Operations & Support:
- Prepare and maintain dental equipment, chairs, compressors, suction units, and light-curing devices.
- Ensure adequate stock of clinical supplies, materials, and consumables.
- Track expiry dates and report shortages promptly to the clinic manager.
- Arrange trays, surgical kits, and instrument sets systematically.
Digital Dentistry & Records:
- Assist in capturing digital records (intraoral photos, scans).
- Support in documenting procedures using OpenDental and OpenEMR.
- Upload X-rays, update charts, and ensure accuracy of clinical notes.
- Maintain patient confidentiality and comply with data protection standards.
Administrative Support:
- Help manage appointments, confirm patient schedules, and organise treatment flow.
- Assist with billing or documentation when required.
- Participate in clinical meetings, training sessions, and quality improvement programs.
Requirements:
- Certificate or Diploma in Dental Nursing from an accredited institution.
- Valid license from the Dental Nurses and Dental Assistants Board of Nigeria.
- Minimum of 1–3 years’ experience in a dental practice or health facility.
- Strong knowledge of clinical procedures, sterilisation, and chairside protocols.
- Experience with digital X-rays and intraoral scanners is an added advantage.
- Skilled in chairside assistance and instrumentation.
- Strong knowledge of infection control and sterilisation.
- Excellent patient communication and calming ability.
- High level of organisation, cleanliness, and attention to detail.
- Ability to work under pressure and manage a fast-moving clinic environment.
- Tech-friendly — comfortable using digital dental tools and EMR systems.
- Professional appearance, empathy, reliability, and integrity.
Working Hours and Conditions:
- Full-time.
- Rotational shifts, including possible weekends.
- Active role involving moving around, assisting procedures, and standing for extended periods.
- Must maintain professional grooming and adherence to OHAI Clinic uniform standards.
