This role is responsible for providing high-quality, clinical, and surgical care to a patient who suffers from ailments affecting their musculoskeletal system, including bones, joints, muscles, tendons, and ligaments. They address physical traumas such as injuries, infections, and other non-invasive orthopedic procedures or surgical interventions.

Job Description/Requirements

Responsibilities:

  • Functionally reports to the Branch Lead Clinical Services
  • Administratively reports to the Managing Director
  • Consulting with patients and analyzing patient data to determine patient needs and treatment goals.
  • Examining patients to diagnose bone, joint ligament, or other musculoskeletal disorders
  • Collaborating with other specialists where necessary to determine a course of treatment.
  • Performing surgical procedures on various parts of the musculoskeletal system including plating broken bones reattaching tendons and ligaments or performing hip replacements among other procedures.
  • Carry out research, clinical audits, and quality assurance exercises regularly.
  • See and advise on inpatients referred by hospital specialist colleagues for assessment, within a timeframe appropriate to the clinical circumstances.
  • Follow established surgical techniques during the operation.
  • Be available to consult with the Registrar/ Surgeon by telephone, or be called back to assist the Registrar/ Surgeon or other members of the Team.
  • Conduct research to develop and test surgical techniques that can improve operating procedures and outcomes.
  • Ensure comprehensive, accurate, and concise medical records are collected and maintained for patients with an appropriate signed and dated legible entry in the patient’s medical record on every attendance of a patient.
  • Contribute to quality patient care by participating in case planning which includes appropriate pre-admission planning, in-hospital care, and discharge planning.
  • Request for investigations surgical treatment, medical treatment, and discharge as professional competence dictates.
  • Participate in clinical audits and quality programs as appropriate.
  • To be "on-call" is a requirement of the position
  • To teach/train registrars, Medical Officers, House Officers, nurses, and nurse assistants as required.
  • Oversee the Orthopedic surgery unit of the hospital.
  • Manage the administrative requirements of the hospital and patient care including ensuring discharge summaries and medico-legal correspondence are completed with no delay.
  • Be aware of and adhere to all Lily Hospital policies and procedures in reference to clinical practice.
  • Coordinates the departmental activities with those of the hospital.
  • Ensure accomplishment of quality training in the department.
  • Participate in clinical audits and quality programs as appropriate.
  • Ensuring consistent and accurate medical record-keeping practices.
  • Ensure proper credentialing of all patients before going to the theatre for surgery.
  • Comply with all the provisions of the Nigeria Data Protection Regulation (NDPR) 2019.



Requirements:

  • Minimum of 3- 5 years cognate Orthopaedic surgical experience.
  • Must have a license to practice medicine from the Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria
  • Must hold a specialist qualification with a Fellow National Postgraduate College of Nigeria (Orthopaedics and Trauma)
  • Fellow of the West African College of Surgeons, Orthopedics or Fellowship of the Royal College of Surgeons. (Orthopaedics and Traumatology).
  • Knowledge and surgical skills in orthopedic Trauma, spine surgery, arthroplasty, arthroscopy/sports medicine, pediatrics orthopedics orthopedics oncology, and general orthopedics.
  • Knowledge of Clinical Surgery and other specialist areas of medical practice such as oncology, pathology, radiology and pediatrics, traumatology, neurosurgery, and cardiothoracic medicine.
  • The job holder must have good hand-eye coordination, stamina, and empathy for patients.
  • The job holder must have a working knowledge of global quality assurance, clinical audit principles, and processes and must exhibit a commitment towards continuous quality improvement.
  • Familiarity with cultural and religious concerns of patients, and current legislation on patient rights in regards to National Health Bill.
  • Job holders must be empathetic and portray a caring and professional manner in all aspects of work.
  • Must show evidence of competence in the management of orthopedic cases and evidence of active participation in surgical research i.e., publications and journals.
  • The job holder must have good communication skills, a strong ability to work well under extreme pressure, self-discipline, and excellent long-term concentration.
