Job Summary
The Full-Time Physician/Medical Officer at Orlu United Medical Centre will be responsible for delivering high-quality, patient-centred medical care across outpatient, inpatient, and emergency services. Working within a multidisciplinary team, the physician will evaluate, diagnose, and manage a broad range of medical conditions while ensuring continuity of care and adherence to clinical best practices. Job Description/Requirements
Responsibilities:
- Patient Assessment & Diagnosis: Conduct detailed medical histories and physical examinations to diagnose common acute and chronic illnesses in adult and pediatric patients.
- Treatment Planning & Implementation: Develop and implement individualised care plans using current clinical guidelines, resource availability, and patient preferences.
- Diagnostics & Investigations: Order and interpret laboratory tests, radiological imaging (e.g., X-rays, ultrasound), and other diagnostic procedures, ensuring cost-effective utilisation.
- Medical Procedures: Perform routine clinical procedures such as wound suturing, catheterisation, intravenous line insertion, and fluid resuscitation within the scope of practice.
- Inpatient Care: Admit, monitor, and manage hospitalised patients through daily ward rounds, prescription reviews, treatment modifications, and discharge planning.
- Emergency Response: Provide first-line management for emergency cases and participate in the hospital’s on-call roster for after-hours coverage.
- Multidisciplinary Collaboration: Work closely with nurses, pharmacists, laboratory scientists, and specialist consultants to ensure coordinated and holistic patient care.
- Medical Documentation: Maintain accurate, timely, and legible medical records in physical files or electronic health systems, complying with hospital policies and MDCN standards.
- Clinical Governance & Quality: Adhere to medical protocols, infection control standards, and clinical audit processes that promote continuous improvement in patient outcomes.
- Education & Mentorship: Supervise and mentor junior doctors, NYSC doctors, and medical interns, fostering clinical learning and professionalism.
- Community Engagement & Health Promotion: Participate in hospital-led public health initiatives, community outreach programs, and awareness campaigns as required.
- Professional Development: Engage in continuing medical education (CMEs), case presentations, and relevant trainings to maintain current licensure and clinical competency.
Requirements:
- Medical Degree (MBBS or MD) from an accredited university.
- Full registration and valid annual practising license from the Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria (MDCN).
- Minimum of 5 years post-NYSC clinical experience in a hospital setting.
- Experience handling both outpatient and inpatient caseloads in general medical practice.
- Postgraduate training or fellowship (e.g., in Internal Medicine, Family Medicine, General Practice, or Surgery) is an added advantage.
- Strong clinical reasoning and diagnostic skills.
- Confidence managing emergencies and initiating treatment protocols.
- Familiarity with managing diseases common in Nigeria, such as malaria, typhoid, hypertension, diabetes, sepsis, and childhood illnesses.
- Basic proficiency in medical documentation software and hospital information systems.
- Skilled in essential procedures such as CPR, wound management, and IV drug administration.
- Compassionate and respectful approach to patient care.
- Excellent interpersonal skills to engage with colleagues and patients from diverse backgrounds.
- Ability to work under pressure and make sound decisions in time-sensitive scenarios.
- Must be based in or willing to relocate to Orlu, Imo State.
- Full participation in the hospital’s on-call and duty roster is required.
