Job Summary

The Clinical Pharmacist at Orlu United Medical Centre will serve a key role in supporting rational drug use, improving therapeutic outcomes, and ensuring the safe and effective delivery of pharmaceutical care. As a core member of the healthcare team, the pharmacist will manage both the clinical and operational functions of the pharmacy, collaborate with physicians and nurses on treatment plans, and support patient education and medication safety across the hospital. This role is critical in ensuring compliance with national drug regulations, optimising available resources, and upholding the Centre’s commitment to community-based healthcare excellence.

Job Description/Requirements

Responsibilities:

  • Pharmacy Operations Management: Oversee daily pharmacy operations, including procurement, inventory control, storage, and medication dispensing, in accordance with PCN regulations and hospital protocols.
  • Prescription Review and Clinical Validation: Evaluate prescriptions and patient medication profiles to identify potential drug interactions, contraindications, or dosing errors, with timely communication of recommendations to prescribers.
  • Medication Preparation and Dispensing: Supervise the compounding and dispensing of medications, including reconstitution of injectables, preparation of IV fluids, and basic aseptic techniques (as resources allow).
  • Ward-Based Clinical Support: Participate in medical ward rounds and provide pharmaceutical input on drug selection, dosage, administration routes, and treatment monitoring, especially for chronic illnesses and high-risk patients.
  • Patient Education and Counselling: Educate inpatients and outpatients on proper medication use, possible side effects, adherence tips, and lifestyle considerations — especially for conditions like hypertension, diabetes, and infectious diseases.
  • Medication Use and Policy Development: Assist in formulating and updating hospital-specific drug formularies, treatment guidelines, and standard operating procedures in collaboration with the Pharmacy & Therapeutics Committee.
  • Pharmacovigilance and Drug Safety: Monitor and report adverse drug reactions (ADRs), medication errors, and drug quality concerns to relevant regulatory bodies and internal quality assurance teams.
  • Emergency Response Support: Provide critical medication support during emergencies and participate in Code Blue or other rapid response scenarios when necessary.
  • Controlled Substances Management: Ensure proper documentation, storage, and auditing of narcotics, psychotropics, and other controlled medicines in compliance with NDLEA and PCN guidelines.
  • Training and Staff Supervision: Mentor intern pharmacists, pharmacy technicians, and support staff, promoting a culture of continuous learning and professional accountability.
  • Inventory Optimisation and Cost-Effective Procurement: Work with the procurement unit to ensure timely restocking, reduce drug expiries, and negotiate with local suppliers for cost-effective sourcing while maintaining quality standards.
  • Community Health Integration: Support hospital outreach efforts, including vaccination drives, awareness campaigns, and chronic disease management programs, particularly in underserved communities.


Requirements:

  • Educational Qualification: B.Pharm or Pharm.D degree from a PCN-accredited university.
  • Licensure: Current license to practice issued by the Pharmacists Council of Nigeria (PCN); must be in good standing.
  • Experience: At least 3–5 years post-NYSC experience, preferably in a hospital setting with exposure to inpatient and outpatient pharmacy services.
  • Solid understanding of pharmacology, dosage calculations, and therapeutic drug monitoring
  • Familiarity with common disease profiles in Nigeria, such as malaria, typhoid, TB, HIV/AIDS, and hypertension.
  • Experience using pharmacy software or basic inventory tracking systems (e.g., RxInventory, MedAssist, or manual systems).
  • Competence in sterile preparation techniques and basic emergency drug use.
  • Regulatory Familiarity: Understanding of PCN, NAFDAC, and NDLEA compliance requirements. Ability to interpret and apply national treatment guidelines (e.g., STGs, Essential Medicines List).
  • Interpersonal Skills: Excellent communication, patient counseling, and teamwork skills, with the cultural sensitivity required for working in a diverse Nigerian clinical setting.
  • Leadership and Initiative: Self-motivated and committed to building a strong, efficient, and ethical pharmacy unit aligned with the hospital’s mission.
  • Location Requirement: Must be based in or willing to relocate to Orlu, Imo State. Availability for weekend calls or duty rotation may be required.
