We are building Africa’s first disability-led media platform, where persons with disabilities are not just featured in stories but are the writers, journalists, creators, editors, designers, and storytellers shaping the narrative.
Beyond Barriers Media exists to:
- Tell disability-led stories
- Share news, opportunities, and lived experiences
- Produce podcasts, articles, and visual storytelling content
- Build a global community of contributors and volunteers with disabilities at the center
- Advocate for inclusion of Persons With Disabilities (PWDs) across government and corporate bodies
We are currently assembling our founding creative and technical team to build the platform from the ground up.
Role Overview
The Lead Website Developer will build and manage the Beyond Barriers Media website from the ground up. This includes designing the platform, setting up the blog/news system, and ensuring the website is accessible, functional, and easy to use.
Key Responsibilities
- Build and design the BBM website (news, blog, podcast, and opportunities sections)
- Set up a content management system (WordPress, Webflow, or similar)
- Ensure the website is mobile-friendly and responsive
- Maintain basic website updates and fixes
- Ensure accessibility for persons with disabilities (screen readers, keyboard navigation, etc.)
- Work with the design and editorial team to publish content
Required Skills
- Website development experience (WordPress, Webflow, or coding)
- Basic understanding of UI/UX design
- Knowledge of accessibility best practices is a plus
- Ability to work remotely and independently
Preferred
- Person with a disability (strongly encouraged to apply)
- Interest in media, storytelling, or social impact
- Ability to build simple, clean, fast websites
Time Commitment
- Flexible (5–10 hours per week preferred)
