Role Description The Artificial Intelligence Researcher role at Oragonlabs is an on-site position based in Nigeria. The researcher will design, develop, and evaluate machine learning and AI models tailored to sovereign, privacy-preserving, and resource-constrained environments. Day-to-day tasks include formulating research questions, conducting experiments, analyzing results, and translating findings into deployable systems for sectors such as healthcare, finance, and public services. The role involves collaborating with cross-functional teams to adapt models to local infrastructure, data-residency requirements, and linguistic contexts, while contributing to publications, technical documentation, and open models. The researcher will also engage with partners and stakeholders to understand real-world needs and ensure that solutions are robust, fair, and aligned with Oragonlabs’ commitments.
Qualifications
- Strong foundation in Computer Science, including algorithms, data structures, and systems relevant to AI research.
- Expertise in Pattern Recognition and machine learning methods for building and evaluating predictive models.
- Proficiency in Data Science, including data preprocessing, feature engineering, and model deployment in real-world environments.
- Demonstrated Research experience, including designing experiments, publishing or presenting findings, and working with complex, real-world problems.
- Solid grounding in Statistics for rigorous model evaluation, uncertainty estimation, and hypothesis testing.
- Experience with modern ML frameworks (e.g., PyTorch, TensorFlow) and programming languages such as Python.
- Familiarity with privacy-preserving techniques, data sovereignty principles, and regulatory considerations in AI.
- Ability to work collaboratively on-site, communicate clearly with technical and non-technical stakeholders, and adapt solutions to local constraints.
- Advanced degree in Computer Science, Data Science, AI, or a related field is preferred; relevant industry or research lab experience is highly valued.
