THE JOB
AFP is seeking an English-language journalist with strong digital investigation skills to join its Lagos bureau as part of the international fact-checking team. The initial contract will be for a period of 3 months (until December 31) and may be renewed on a yearly basis.
You will cover online misinformation in Nigeria and the wider region as well as support fact-checkers in other bureaus in Africa and beyond.
We are looking for an agile journalist who can easily navigate online and digital disinformation, whether that be on major social media platforms such as Facebook, discussion boards or encrypted chat apps. Expertise in digital verification techniques and tools are a big plus. Staying on top of developments in technology trends including AI is also key.
The roles require an ability to work in a fast-paced multimedia newsroom and meet tight deadlines, as well as collaborate as part of a global team.
You will have a keen interest in and deep knowledge of West Africa. Experience of living in other parts of Africa will be a major advantage.
You will have the ability to explain complex issues at speed to an international audience. While some stories will appear solely on the AFP Fact Check website, much of the production will also feature on AFPâs text wire, in a reflection of the increased global interest in the issue of disinformation.

RELIABILITY
You must ensure the reliability of our news coverage and respect for the agency's editorial policy. You should be familiar with the issues involved in handling user-generated content and AFPâs guidelines concerning the use of UGC, especially to find and verify amateur videos.
SOCIAL MEDIA
Use of social media (Facebook, Instagram, Xâ¦) and networking apps is essential, in accordance with the guidelines for using social networks as an AFP journalist.
WORKING HOURS
In an ever-changing media environment, the nature of the job could evolve in line with coverage demands and the requirements of an increasingly diverse client base.
SKILLS REQUIRED
You will need to demonstrate an ability to work under pressure and be available to work evenings and weekends when necessary. You must have native-level English. Knowledge of local languages and/or French /Arabic/ Spanish would be an advantage.
You will also need to have: solid news judgment and the ability to generate stories and uncover interesting angles, the capacity to react quickly to breaking news, and strong motivation. Familiarity with social media, in particular as a news source.
