Job Description/Requirements

General Statement of the job:

- To implement and deliver an appropriately broad, balanced, relevant and differential curriculum for pupils, incorporating the National Curriculum requirements and in line with the curriculum polices of the school.

- To facilitate, support and monitor the overall progress and development of a designated group of pupils.

- To foster a stimulating and creative learning environment and educational experience which provides students with the opportunity for fulfill their individual potential, and is conducive to the good management of teaching and learning.

- To share in the development of the school curriculum, courses of study, teaching materials, teaching programmes, methods of teaching and assessment and their review.

- All staff must follow all school procedures for ensuring the safety of all children in school.

- To support and contribute to the school’s responsibility for safeguarding children.


The following duties shall be deemed to be included in the professional duties which a teacher may be required to perform:-

Responsible for: Directing and supervising the work of teaching assistants.

Generic Responsibilities


o To teach pupils in their assigned group according to their educational needs, including the setting and marking of work to be carried out by the students in school and elsewhere.

o To ensure a high quality learning experience for pupils, which meets internal and external quality standards.

o To use a variety of a delivery methods appropriate to students’ learning styles and the varying demands of the curriculum.

 Planning and preparing courses and lessons;

 Teaching, according to their educational needs, the pupils assigned to him/her, including the setting and marking of work to be carried out by the pupils in school and elsewhere;

 Assessing, recording and reporting on the development, progress and attainment of pupils.

 To ensure a high quality learning experience for pupils.

Follows professional practices consistent with school and system policies in working with students, students’ records, parents, and colleagues.

 Demonstrates communication and interpersonal skills as they relate to interaction with students, parents, other teachers, administrators, and other school personnel.

 Is available to students and parents for conferences according to system policies

 Facilitates home-school communication by such means as holding conferences, telephoning, and sending written communications especially in communication diaries.

 Maintains confidentiality of students and students’ records

 Works cooperatively with the HOS, HODs’, special support personnel, colleagues, and parents

Demonstrates professional practices in teaching

 Models correct use of language, oral and written (English language)

 Demonstrates accurate and up-to-date knowledge of content

 Implement the school’s homework policy

 Implement the school’s behaviour policy

 Implement the school handwriting policy

 Implement the school reading policy

 Implements designated curriculum

 Maintains lesson plans as required by school policy

 Assigns reasonable tasks and homework to students

 Participates in professional development opportunities and applies the concepts to classroom and school activities.

Other Activities

 Promoting the general progress and well-being of individual pupils and of any class or group of pupils assigned to him / her

 Providing guidance and advice to pupils on educational and social matters and on their further education and future careers including information about sources of more expert advice on specific questions, making relevant records and reports;

 Making records of and reports on the personal and social needs of pupils except in instances where to do so might be regarded as compromising a teacher’s own position;

 Communicating and consulting with the parents of pupils; on open days and other (often less formal) meetings at school

 Communicating and co-operating with such persons or bodies outside the school as may be approved by the school and the Board of Governors;

 Participating in meetings arranged for any of the purposes described above.

 Supervising and teaching pupils whose teacher is not available

 To direct and supervise the work of Teaching Assistants

 To provide a positive, and conducive and safe learning environment, encouraging high standards in punctuality, presentation of work and relationships.

 To support the schools special needs policy on inclusion and to assist in the identification and teaching of children with special educational needs within the class

 To secure and allocate the resources necessary to deliver the curriculum area(s) within an allocated budget.

 To advise and support other members of staff on the content and delivery of the curriculum area(s).

 To provide Parents workshops in order to develop a better understanding of the curriculum.

 Acts in a professional manner and assumes responsibility for the total school program, its safety and good order.

 Takes precautions to protect records, equipment, materials, and facilities

 Assumes responsibility for supervising students in out-of-class settings

 Demonstrates appropriate personal contact while in performance of school duties

 Assumes a role in meeting the school’s student achievement goal, including academic gains of students assigned to the teacher

 Observations of the teacher by the HOD Curriculum & Instructor, in addition to those recorded on the observation form during instruction, at other times as appropriate.

Assessments and Reports

 Providing or contributing to oral and written assessment, reports and references relating to individual pupils and groups of pupils except in instances where to do so might be regarded as compromising a teacher’s own position.

 To assess, record and report on the attendance, progress, development and attainment of assigned pupils and keep such records as are required by the school’s systems.

Staff Development/Training /Reviews/Meetings

 Participating, if required, in any scheme of staff development and performance review

 Reviewing from time to time his/her methods of teaching and programmes of work;

 Participating in arrangements for his/her further training and professional development as a teacher.

 Advising and co-operating with the HOS,HODS’ and other teachers (or any one or more of them) on the preparation and development of courses of study, teaching materials, teaching programmes, methods of teaching and assessment and pastoral arrangements.

 To identify and secure provision of appropriate in-service professional development in relation to the curriculum area, with the support of the Leadership Team.

 To work as a member of a designated team and contribute positively to effective working relationship within the school.

 To actively engage in performance management.

 To actively pursue own personal and professional development

Discipline, Health and Safety

 Maintaining good order and discipline among pupils in accordance with the policies of the school and safeguarding their health and safety both when they are authorized to be on the school premises and when they are engaged in authorized school activities elsewhere e.g during excursion

 Participating in meetings at the school which relate to the curriculum for the school or the administration or organization of the school, including pastoral arrangements.

 To set high expectations for pupils’ behaviour and maintain a good standard of discipline through well focused teaching, fostering positive relationships and implementing the school’s behaviour policy.

 To support and adhere to the school’s quality assurance procedures.

 To contribute to the personal, social, health, citizenship and enterprise education of pupils according to school policy.

 To play a full part in the life of the school community, and support its ethos.

 To follow and actively promote the school’s policies

 To comply with health and safety policy and undertake risk assessments as appropriate.

Public Examinations

 Participating in arrangements for preparing pupils for public examinations and in assessing pupils for the purposes of such examinations; recording and reporting such assessments; and participating in arrangements for pupils’ presentation for and supervision during such examination.


 Leading or line managing small teams (eg Year group planning)

 Acting as Head Teacher in the absence of the Head Teacher and Deputy Head Teacher.

 Being a third key holder for school security purposes

Governing Agencies and Supervisory Personnel

 Complies with rules, regulations, and policies of governing agencies and supervisory personnel

 Complies with state administrative regulations and Board of Education Policies

 Adheres to school and local school system procedures and rules

 Conducts assigned classes at the times scheduled

 Enforces regulations concerning student conduct and discipline

 Demonstrates timeliness and attendance for assigned responsibilities

 Provides adequate information, plans, and materials for substitute teacher

 Maintains accurate, complete, and appropriate records and files reports promptly

 Attends and participates in faculty meetings and other assigned meetings and activities according to school policy

 Complies with conditions as state in contract


 Participating in administrative and organizational tasks related to such duties as are described above, including the management or supervision of persons providing support for the teachers in the school and the ordering and allocation of equipment and materials;

 Attending assemblies;

 Registering the attendance of pupils and supervising pupils, whether these duties are to be performed before, during or after school sessions.
