Job summary

The Agronomist plans and supervises crop production activities to improve yield, soil health, and farm productivity. The role oversees planting, fertilization, irrigation, pest control, and harvesting while ensuring proper record-keeping, efficient input use, and compliance with farm SOPs and operational standards.

Job descriptions & requirements

Responsibilities:

  • Develop crop production plans and planting schedules.
  • Select appropriate crop varieties based on soil type, climate, and farm objectives.
  • Plan and manage fertilizer programs, irrigation schedules, and pest management strategies.
  • Supervise field operations, including land preparation, planting, spraying, irrigation, and harvesting.
  • Ensure field workers follow proper agronomic procedures and farm SOPs.
  • Monitor crop growth stages and field performance and adjust practices when required.
  • Conduct soil assessments and recommend soil improvement strategies.
  • Develop and implement soil nutrition and fertilization programs.
  • Monitor crop health and identify nutrient deficiencies, pests, diseases, or weed issues.
  • Recommend and oversee appropriate pest, disease, and weed control measures.
  • Ensure safe and responsible use of fertilizers, pesticides, and other agricultural inputs.
  • Maintain accurate records of planting dates, fertilizer applications, pesticide use, irrigation schedules, and harvest data.
  • Track input usage and analyze crop performance to improve productivity.
  • Submit crop production reports to the Operations Manager with the CEO copied.
  • Recommend required agricultural inputs such as seeds, fertilizers, and crop protection products.
  • Coordinate with the Storekeeper to ensure the timely availability of inputs.
  • Ensure crop production activities comply with farm SOPs, safety procedures, and operational standards.
  • Promote sustainable farming practices and efficient use of farm resources.


Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Agronomy, Crop Science, Agriculture, or a related field.
  • Minimum of 3–5 years of practical experience in crop production, field agronomy, or farm management.
  • Experience supervising field workers or farm labor teams is preferred.
  • Strong understanding of soil fertility, crop nutrition, irrigation practices, and pest and disease management.
  • Knowledge of safe and effective use of fertilizers, herbicides, pesticides, and other agricultural inputs.
  • Understanding of crop production planning and field operations.
  • Ability to maintain accurate farm records and crop production reports.
  • Ability to analyze crop performance and recommend improvements.
  • Basic computer literacy for reporting and documentation.
  • Strong observational and problem‑solving skills.
  • Ability to work in field environments and supervise farm labor.
  • Good communication and coordination skills.
