Senior Backend Engineer

Responsibilities:

• Architect, develop, and maintain highly scalable backend services using Microservices Architecture and API-First design principles.
• Design and implement distributed systems capable of supporting millions of payroll, recruitment, talent management, and workforce transactions.
• Build the core platform powering Droomwork Payroll, Droomwork Hire, and future HR infrastructure products.
• Develop secure RESTful APIs, webhooks, event-driven services, and SDKs for internal teams, enterprise customers, and third-party developers.
• Design authentication, authorization, and identity management systems using OAuth2, JWT, RBAC, and multi-tenant security models.
• Implement event-driven architectures using message queues and streaming technologies.
• Build integrations with payment gateways, banking APIs, tax authorities, pension providers, identity verification services, ERP platforms, and HRIS solutions.
• Design resilient data architectures using PostgreSQL, SQL, and NoSQL databases with replication, sharding, caching, and high-availability strategies.
• Lead the adoption of Domain-Driven Design (DDD), Clean Architecture, and engineering best practices.
• Build AI-ready infrastructure for intelligent workflows, document processing, recommendations, predictive analytics, and workflow automation.
• Optimize system performance, observability, reliability, and fault tolerance using monitoring, logging, tracing, and automated alerting.
• Design and maintain CI/CD pipelines, infrastructure automation, containerized deployments, and cloud-native environments using Docker and Kubernetes.
• Implement enterprise security best practices, including encryption, secrets management, audit logging, rate limiting, and compliance controls.
• Collaborate closely with Product, Frontend, DevOps, AI, and QA teams to deliver production-ready software.
• Mentor engineers through code reviews, architecture discussions, documentation, and engineering standards.
• Evaluate emerging technologies that improve scalability, developer productivity, platform reliability, and operational efficiency.
• Participate in technical roadmap planning and architectural decisions supporting Droomwork's AI-native HR platform vision.
• Ensure backend services maintain high availability, disaster recovery readiness, and zero-downtime deployment.
• Build reusable platform services such as: Notifications, Workflow orchestration, Audit services, File processing, Search, Billing, Permissions, and Organization management
• Champion engineering excellence through testing, automation, documentation, performance benchmarking, and continuous improvement.

Requirements:

• A visionary systems thinker who understands how to build AI-native, API-first distributed systems, not just applications.
• 6+ years of production experience building and scaling distributed or SaaS platforms.
• Deep expertise in multi-tenant architecture, API-first design, and microservices.
• Strong knowledge of databases, DevOps, and cloud infrastructure.
• Experience building and shipping API-first digital products.
• Hands-on experience building AI-native products from scratch.
• Experience integrating AI and automation workflows into product infrastructure.
• Proven ability to manage complex technical projects and deliver results in fast-paced environments.
• Experience with HR, FinTech, or Enterprise SaaS platforms is preferred.
• A hands-on builder who is comfortable writing production code and setting up systems.
• Based in, or willing to relocate to, Port Harcourt, Nigeria.
