We’re Hiring: Senior Backend Engineer (API & Data Infrastructure)

Location: Hybrid/Remote (Africa preferred)

Slate Systems Lab is building Africa’s environmental intelligence infrastructure. As an umbrella company to Farmslate, we transform satellite and climate data into structured signals and APIs that power:

• Agriculture intelligence

• Insurance risk analytics

• ESG reporting systems

• Climate finance platforms

The Role

We’re looking for a Senior Backend Engineer to help design and build our core signal and API infrastructure.

This is not a typical backend role.

You will be working on:

• Data pipelines for satellite & climate data

• Signal computation systems

• Scalable API architecture

• Versioned data and signal systems

• Infrastructure for high-volume geospatial data

• A Geospatial Engineering Team

What You’ll Do

• Design and build scalable backend systems and APIs

• Develop data ingestion and processing pipelines

• Implement signal computation logic and services

• Ensure performance, reliability, and scalability of systems

• Contribute to engineering standards and best practices

What We’re Looking For

• Strong experience in backend engineering (Python, Node.js, or similar)

• Experience building APIs used by external developers

• Solid understanding of databases (SQL/NoSQL)

• Experience with cloud platforms (AWS, GCP, or Azure)

• Understanding of distributed systems and scalable architecture

Bonus (Highly Valuable):

• Experience with data engineering or ML pipelines

• Familiarity with climate, agriculture, or environmental datasets
