Job summary
A Public Health Assistant supports public health programs and helps communities prevent disease, promote wellness, and improve access to health services.
Job descriptions & requirements
Responsibilities:
- Community Health Education: Run sensitization on hygiene, nutrition, family planning, immunization, malaria, HIV/TB, maternal & child health
- Service Delivery Support: Assist in clinics, vaccination campaigns, antenatal care, health screenings, and distribution of health commodities like nets, vitamins, and drugs
- Data & Reporting: Collect health data during house-to-house visits, surveys, and clinic visits. Update registers, DHIS, and submit weekly/monthly reports
- Disease Surveillance: Identify, report, and follow up on suspected cases of notifiable diseases. Support contact tracing during outbreaks
- Program Implementation: Help plan and execute public health campaigns, outreach programs, and health fairs with NGOs, LGA, or the Ministry of Health
- Referrals & Follow-up: Identify at-risk individuals in the community and refer them to PHCs/hospitals. Do follow-ups to ensure treatment adherence
- Record Keeping & Logistics: Manage health education materials, vaccines, cold chain logs, and basic medical supplies. Keep clinic/community records organized
- Collaboration: Work with CHEWs, nurses, environmental health officers, traditional leaders, and community health workers
Requirements:
- Minimum: OND or NCE in Community Health, Public Health, Health Education, Nursing, or related health science
- Preferred: Certificate of Community Health Extension Worker CHEW/JCHEW from a recognized school of health technology
- Added advantage: BSc in Public Health, Health Promotion, or related field
- 1-2 years of experience in a PHC, hospital, or NGO health program preferred
- Field experience in community mobilization and outreach is a big plus
- Basic knowledge of primary healthcare, disease prevention, EPI, and HMIS/DHIS reporting
- Ability to speak local languages + English. Good at health talks and counseling
- Basic MS Word, Excel, and data entry skills
- Empathy, teamwork, problem-solving, good record-keeping, and the ability to work in rural/field settings
- Valid practicing license from CHEW Council or relevant professional body, if applicable
- Ability to ride a motorcycle may be required for some LGA roles
- Willingness to work irregular hours during campaigns/outbreaks
