Medical Laboratory Scientist

As a Laboratory Scientist, you will be part of the Laboratory Operations Team, involved in lab-based tasks such as sampling, testing and measuring in the field of medicine.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS OF THE JOB:
•
To perform routine and specialist analytical testing on a range of biological samples.
•
Examining and analyzing body fluids and cells to look to for bacteria, parasites, and other microorganisms.
•
To analyze data and interpret results.
•
Analyzing the chemical reactions to determine concentrations of compounds such as blood glucose and cholesterol levels.
•
Identifying blood groups and cross matching blood for transfusions.
•
Monitoring the effects of medication by testing how a patient is responding to
treatment.
•
Using microscopes, cell counters, and other sophisticated laboratory equipment.
•
Relaying results to relevant medical staff, who use the information to diagnose and treat
the patient’s illness.
•
Keeping accurate records and writing reports.
•
Assisting in the production and updating of laboratory documentation, particularly relating to policies and standard operating procedures.
•
Ensuring the service is provided in an accurate, efficient and cost effective manner.
•
To assist the sample receipt team with the accessioning of samples if required
•
To process samples and complete test methods in the necessary timeframe to ensure that required turnaround times for reporting results are achieved.
•
To accurately record data, write reports and share results.
•
To support the lab's quality management system by ensuring that working practice is in line with ISO standards and/or other relevant accreditations.
•
To observe all relevant health and safety regulations.
•
To assist in the supervision and mentoring of trainee scientists and other support staff when required.
•
To participate in annual performance and development appraisals and agree on personal targets and objectives with line manager.
Educational:
1.
Maintainining and updating professional knowledge and taking responsibility for continuing professional development(CPD)

2. Take responsibility for your continuing professional development (CPD) by actively reviewing and participating in different projects for continuing professional development, to be agreed by line manager.
Inventory Management
1.
Deputize the Laboratory manager in taking charge of managing laboratory inventory.
Equipment Management

2.Manage and maintain laboratory equipment to ensure optimal performance and reliability.
Safety Management

3.Deputize to oversee all safety protocols within the laboratory, focusing on identifying and mitigating potential hazards to maintain a safe working environment.
Pre-Analytical Activities

4.Supervise the Laboratory Technician/Phlebotomist who will handle all pre-analytical activities, ensuring proper sample collection, handling, and processing to maintain specimen integrity before analysis and outsource investigations.
Laboratory Archives

5.Manage the Archival Unit, by ensuring secure and organized record-keeping for our laboratory documents.


Qualifiactions

Degree in medical laboratory sciences

Minimum of 3 year’s post qualifiaction laboratory experiences across most department in labaoratory sciences

Membership or eligibility for membership of Association of Medical Laboratory Science (AMLS)

To work unsupervissed as well as working as part of a team.
