Role Overview
The Managing Director, Investment Banking will provide strategic, commercial, and operational leadership for the Corporate Finance Division. The role is responsible for driving deal origination, structuring, and execution across capital markets, project finance, and structured finance transactions.
The successful candidate will lead the delivery of innovative financial solutions to corporates, institutions, and government entities while ensuring regulatory compliance, profitability, and sustainable growth. This position requires a strong track record in transaction leadership, stakeholder management, and revenue generation within Nigeria and international markets.
Key Responsibilities
1. Strategic Leadership & Business Direction

  • Develop and execute the Corporate Finance Division's strategy in alignment with the Group's long-term objectives.
  • Provide executive oversight on investment banking activities, ensuring competitiveness and market relevance.
  • Drive innovation in financial products, capital structuring, and advisory solutions.

2. Deal Origination & Execution

  • Lead the sourcing, structuring, and execution of high-value transactions across:
    • Capital Markets (Equity & Debt)
    • Project & Infrastructure Finance
    • Structured & Syndicated Finance
  • Oversee preparation and approval of financial models, investment memoranda, and transaction documentation.
  • Ensure timely and successful deal closures in line with client expectations and internal standards.

3. Business Development & Revenue Growth

  • Design and implement strategies to drive revenue growth, market share, and profitability.
  • Identify new business opportunities across priority sectors (e.g., infrastructure, energy, real estate, telecoms, FMCG).
  • Maintain a strong and sustainable deal pipeline.

4. Client & Stakeholder Management

  • Build and sustain high-level relationships with corporates, institutional investors, regulators, and government agencies.
  • Provide bespoke financial advisory and capital-raising solutions tailored to client needs.
  • Drive client retention, satisfaction, and long-term partnerships.

5. Institutional Partnerships & Funding Relationships

  • Develop and manage strategic relationships with Development Finance Institutions (DFIs), Export Credit Agencies (ECAs), and international financiers.
  • Leverage partnerships to structure complex and large-scale financing transactions, including syndicated deals.

6. Governance, Risk & Regulatory Compliance

  • Ensure full compliance with regulatory frameworks, including SEC regulations and applicable banking laws in Nigeria.
  • Oversee submission of statutory and regulatory reports to relevant authorities.
  • Maintain strong internal controls, risk management practices, and corporate governance standards.

7. Financial Performance Management

  • Drive achievement of revenue targets, profitability (PBT), and other financial KPIs.
  • Monitor cost efficiency and optimize resource allocation across the division.
  • Approve key financial decisions, deal structures, and pricing strategies.

8. Leadership & Talent Development

  • Provide strategic leadership, mentorship, and performance management for senior teams.
  • Build a high-performance culture focused on accountability, collaboration, and results.
  • Lead succession planning and capability development across the division.

Key Duties / Operational Activities

  • Oversee end-to-end execution of investment banking transactions.
  • Lead negotiations with clients, investors, and financing partners.
  • Chair deal review committees, investment committees, and strategy sessions.
  • Monitor deal pipeline, conversion rates, and revenue performance.
  • Collaborate with Legal, Risk, Compliance, and Finance teams on transactions.
  • Ensure adherence to internal policies, governance frameworks, and regulatory requirements.

Key Performance Indicators (KPIs)

  • Value and volume of transactions originated and executed.
  • Revenue growth (fees, commissions, advisory income).
  • Deal pipeline strength and conversion rate.
  • Profitability metrics (PBT, cost-to-income ratio).
  • Client acquisition, satisfaction, and retention levels.
  • Strategic partnerships established (DFIs, ECAs, institutional investors).
  • Leadership effectiveness and team performance metrics.

Technical Competencies

  • Deep expertise in Investment Banking, Corporate Finance, and Capital Markets.
  • Advanced financial modeling, valuation, and deal structuring capabilities.
  • Strong knowledge of credit analysis, risk management, and due diligence.
  • In-depth understanding of Nigerian financial regulations and SEC requirements.
  • Experience in project finance, infrastructure financing, and syndicated lending.
  • Strong financial planning, forecasting, and budgeting skills.

Qualifications & Requirements

  • Experience: Minimum of 15 years' experience in Investment Banking, Corporate Finance, or related financial services, with at least 5–7 years in a senior leadership role.
  • Education: Minimum of a Master's Degree or MBA in Finance, Economics, Business Administration, or a related discipline.
  • Professional Certifications:
    • SEC-sponsored individual (mandatory)
    • CFA, ACA, ACCA, or equivalent professional certification (highly desirable)
  • Regulatory Requirement: Strong working knowledge of Nigerian SEC regulations and capital market operations.
