Human Resources Business Partner
Job descriptions & requirements
Location: Lagos, Nigeria
Reporting To: Founder
Employment Type: Full-Time
Stage: Early-Stage Startup
About Jarakey
Jarakey is building access infrastructure for the modern real estate ecosystem. We connect digital permissions with physical entry points through a single, auditable system, enabling property operators, developers, and residents to manage access securely, transparently, and at scale.
We are an early-stage company headquartered in Lagos, Nigeria, operating with a lean and deliberate team. We move quickly, build with intention, and hold ourselves to high standards of governance and execution from day one.
About the Role
We are looking for an HR Business Partner who is equally comfortable thinking strategically and rolling up their sleeves. As one of our earliest people hires, you will help us build the foundation of how Jarakey operates as an employer: from shaping our people practices to ensuring we are fully compliant with Nigerian labour law.
This role is not a maintenance position. You will help design systems that do not fully exist yet, influence how we hire and develop talent, and ensure our people operations are built correctly from the start. If you are energized by ambiguity, ownership, and the opportunity to shape a company's culture early, this role is for you.
Key Responsibilities
Strategic Partnership
- Partner with the founding team to align people initiatives with business priorities and growth plans
- Support organizational design decisions as the company scales its team and operations
- Provide data-driven insights on headcount, attrition, and workforce planning to inform leadership decisions
Talent Acquisition & Performance
- Lead end-to-end recruitment for critical roles, with a focus on quality, speed, and candidate experience
- Design and implement a performance management framework suited to a fast-moving startup environment
- Build early-stage succession and talent development practices to retain and grow high performers
Employee Experience & Culture
- Champion a work environment that is inclusive, high-performance, and aligned to Jarakey's values
- Design and execute engagement initiatives that improve retention and team morale
- Serve as a trusted, accessible point of contact for employee concerns and feedback
Compliance & Employee Relations
- Ensure compliance with Nigerian labour laws, NDPR, and internal policies
- Manage disciplinary processes, grievance handling, and conflict resolution in line with Nigerian legal requirements
- Maintain compliant employee contracts, offer letters, and policy documentation
- Ensure NDPR compliance in the handling of employee personal data
HR Operations & Governance
- Own end-to-end employee lifecycle processes: onboarding, confirmation, role changes, and offboarding
- Coordinate payroll inputs and work with Finance to ensure accurate, timely salary processing
- Maintain accurate and audit-ready HR records and documentation
- Build and maintain an employee handbook and HR policy suite appropriate for the Nigerian context
Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Human Resources, Business Administration, or a related discipline
- Minimum 5 years of HR experience, at least 2 of which were in a business-partnering or generalist capacity
- Solid, working knowledge of Nigerian labour law, statutory compliance obligations, and employment best practices
- Experience in a startup, technology, or high-growth company environment is a strong advantage
- Professional certification (CIPM, CIPD, SHRM, or equivalent) is an advantage, not a requirement
Key Capabilities
- Strong business acumen and stakeholder management
- Ability to influence and advise senior leaders
- Solid understanding of HR compliance and governance
- Analytical and data-driven mindset
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
- Adaptability in a dynamic, fast-paced environment
What We Are Looking For
Business Acumen: You understand what drives a startup, not just HR theory
Compliance Grounding: You know Nigerian labour law and stay ahead of regulatory changes
Builder Mindset: You are comfortable creating structure where little exists
Influence Without Authority: You can advise and guide founders and senior stakeholders
Data Orientation: You make decisions and recommendations backed by numbers
Communication: You are clear, direct, and culturally sensitive in how you engage
