Job Summary

The Governance and Business Control Officer (GBCO) is responsible for safeguarding the company’s assets, strengthening internal controls, and ensuring full compliance with management policies, statutory requirements, and industry standards. This role provides independent oversight across financial, operational, and compliance functions, ensuring that processes are transparent, risks are managed proactively, and management decisions are based on accurate, reliable information. The GBCO reports directly to the Managing Director, serving as a guardian of integrity and efficiency by designing, testing, and enforcing internal control systems that support sustainable growth, ethical conduct, and operational resilience. The position also functions as a process improvement and assurance advisor, ensuring that every operational cycle from cash handling to client service delivery aligns with Montgomery’s governance framework and risk appetite. Other duties as assigned.

Job Description/Requirements

Responsibilities:

Risk Assessment and Control Framework:

  • Conduct risk identification and evaluation across departments — financial, operational, technological, and reputational.
  • Maintain a Risk and Control Matrix (RCM) to document key processes, associated risks, and mitigating controls.
  • Develop and update risk registers, ensuring timely review and reporting to management.
  • Monitor emerging risks (e.g., cybersecurity, customer data, regulatory changes) and recommend mitigating strategies.


Policy, Process, and Compliance Management:

  • Design, document, and update policies, SOPs, and compliance manuals to reflect current laws, NDIC guidelines, and internal governance frameworks.
  • Ensure consistent implementation of management-approved procedures across departments.
  • Evaluate compliance with statutory filings, customer due diligence, and operational documentation requirements.
  • Support periodic policy orientation and training sessions to ensure staff awareness and adherence.


 Internal Control and Assurance Activities:

  • Develop and implement audit and monitoring plans to test process effectiveness and adherence.
  • Perform spot checks, surprise audits, and reconciliations on key operational areas (e.g., revenue, vault access, asset custody, payroll, and procurement).
  • Identify control lapses or non-compliance incidents and recommend actionable corrective measures.
  • Evaluate the adequacy of segregation of duties, access controls, and authorisation hierarchies.
  • Track remediation and report unresolved control deficiencies to the Managing Director for escalation.


Financial Integrity and Reporting:

  • Verify accuracy of accounting entries, reconciliations, and SAGE transactions to ensure data reliability.
  • Support Finance in month-end close validation and internal audit readiness.
  • Evaluate the linkage between operational activities and financial results, highlighting discrepancies or inefficiencies.
  • Provide management with control-focused financial analysis for decision support.


Investigation, Ethics, and Incident Review:

  • Investigate control breaches, irregularities, or potential fraud in collaboration with HR and Legal.
  • Document findings, root causes, and recommendations with evidence for management action.
  • Maintain a confidential case log of incidents and outcomes to support transparency and accountability.
  • Promote ethical business conduct and support staff awareness programmes on integrity and confidentiality.


Process Improvement and Business Continuity:

  • Evaluate workflows for bottlenecks or duplication and propose automation or streamlining opportunities.
  • Recommend internal process improvements that enhance efficiency, accuracy, and risk mitigation.
  • Participate in business continuity planning, scenario testing, and post-incident reviews.
  • Support digital transformation projects (e.g., CRM and ERP integrations) to ensure embedded controls at every stage.


Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s degree in accounting, finance, business administration, or economics (required).
  • Postgraduate or professional qualification (e.g., ACCA, ICAN, CIMA, CIA) preferred. Experience:
  • 5 years of progressive experience in accounting, internal audit, or business controls.
  • Experience in a regulated or financial-services environment (e.g., banking, insurance, vault operations) is an advantage.
  • Professional audit, risk, or compliance certifications (e.g., CRMA, CISA, ISO 9001/27001, or equivalent).
  • Strong Excel skills (pivot tables, analytics) and proficiency in SAGE Evolution and Microsoft Office Suite.
  • Familiarity with CRM systems, audit software, and data visualisation tools (e.g., Power BI) is desirable
  • Deep understanding of COSO, ISO, and risk-based auditing frameworks.
  • Ability to design, test, and optimise workflows.
  • Advanced data interpretation and variance analysis capability.
  • Working knowledge of NDIC, tax, and statutory obligations.
  • Impeccable integrity and discretion in handling sensitive information.
  • Ability to present findings and recommendations clearly to management.
  • Proactive in identifying and mitigating risks before escalation.
  • Operates with autonomy while building cross-functional partnerships.
  • Precision in financial and control documentation.
  • Ability to embed governance practices within evolving business systems.
  • Compliance with internal control and audit schedules.
  • Timeliness and quality of risk and control reports.

Remuneration: NGN 350,000 - 400,000
