Backend Software Engineer
Job summary
The Backend Software Engineer is responsible for designing, building, and maintaining the server-side architecture that powers the AfWS data centre software stack. This includes the APIs, data pipelines, authentication systems, and MQTT integration layers that connect HASIP, FLOPSFlex, GOCLIMS, and SteadGrid.

Responsibilities:
- Design and build RESTful APIs and backend services for GOCLIMS (tenant portal) and SteadGrid (NOC system)
- Integrate with the HASIP MQTT broker (EMQX) to consume and process real-time telemetry from servers and IoT devices
- Build and maintain the FLOPSFlex compute flexibility exchange backend, including billing engine, session management, and settlement logic
- Design and implement authentication, authorisation, and role-based access control across all platform services
- Build data pipelines that aggregate, store, and serve telemetry data from 48-node server chassis to dashboards and billing systems
- Write clean, tested, well-documented code — unit tests and integration tests are mandatory, not optional
- Collaborate closely with the frontend engineer and the external firmware specialist (Filip Milev, Sofia) on API contracts
Requirements:
- Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or related discipline
- Minimum 3 years of backend software engineering experience in a production environment
- Strong proficiency in Python (primary) and at least one of: Node.js, Go, or Java
- Direct experience building and consuming RESTful APIs and WebSocket connections
- Experience with message brokers — MQTT (EMQX or Mosquitto), RabbitMQ, or Kafka
- Solid understanding of relational databases (PostgreSQL preferred) and time-series data storage
- Experience with Docker and containerised deployments.
