Senior Political Reporter

Responsibilities:

• Take primary responsibility for reporting political, governance, policy, civic, and accountability stories assigned within the politics beat.
• Identify, pitch, and develop strong political story ideas with clear public relevance, editorial value, and audience importance.
• Track political developments across elections, public institutions, policy, and governance, with close attention to stories that affect everyday realities.
• Report stories thoroughly through research, verification, interviews, source development, and clear editorial framing.
• Produce accurate, well-structured, and engaging political story packages in the most suitable format for each story, including written reports, video scripts, carousel copy, and other editorial formats as required.
• Develop strong angles that help audiences understand what is happening, why it matters, who it affects, and what the wider implications are.
• Build and maintain relevant source relationships across government, policy, civic, and public-interest spaces.
• Work closely with other stakeholders to refine story angles, strengthen reporting, and align coverage with editorial standards.
• Contribute to political explainers, analysis pieces, and deeper reporting projects as required.
• Deliver work on time, with strong attention to accuracy, structure, clarity, and editorial quality.
• Stay informed on key political, policy, and civic developments within Nigeria and the wider environment, bringing strong awareness and fresh reporting ideas into the newsroom.

Requirements:

• At least a Bachelor’s degree in any discipline from a reputable Nigerian or Overseas University.
• Must have completed NYSC at the time of application.
• A minimum of 4 years of relevant professional experience in journalism, reporting, editorial, or a related media role.
• Demonstrable experience covering politics, governance, public affairs, public policy, elections, civic issues, or related subject areas.
• Strong reporting, research, interviewing, and verification skills, with clear evidence of handling politically sensitive or high-relevance stories with maturity and care.
• Strong writing ability with proven experience producing accurate, well-structured, insightful, and compelling editorial work.
• A strong understanding of the Nigerian political and civic environment, with the ability to identify meaningful stories quickly and develop them with depth and relevance.
• Ability to independently develop strong story packages across multiple editorial formats, including written reports, video scripts, and carousel copy.
• Strong editorial judgment and the ability to approach political stories with nuance, fairness, clarity, and responsibility.
• Proven ability to work effectively in a fast-paced remote environment and manage multiple deadlines without compromising quality.
• Ability to work collaboratively with editors, presenters, video, design, and social teams while taking strong ownership of assigned work.
• Familiarity with digital publishing workflows and collaboration tools such as Google Workspace, Slack, Trello, Notion, or similar platforms.
