Pig Attendant/Pig Unit Worker
Job summary
To support daily piggery operations through disciplined execution of feeding, cleaning, hygiene, observation, and animal handling tasks while ensuring strict compliance with biosecurity and recordkeeping requirements. This role is critical because the piggery will only perform well if daily tasks are done consistently and correctly, including accurate feeding, clean pens and water systems, early symptom detection, correct piglet care support, and strict hygiene discipline
Job descriptions & requirements
Responsibilities:
Feeding & Water Management (Daily Core Task):
- Feed pigs strictly according to the ration plan, feeding times and assigned pig categories (gilts, boars, gestation, lactation, weaners)
- Ensure no “free feeding” or informal ration changes.
- Confirm water availability at all times and report any water failure immediately.
- Assist in measuring and distributing feed under supervision.
Pen Cleaning, Hygiene & Sanitation:
- Clean pens daily according to the assigned schedule.
- Remove waste and maintain hygiene to reduce disease and odour.
- Wash and disinfect equipment as directed.
- Keep walkways clear and safe.
Pig Observation & Early Health Reporting:
- Observe pigs daily for signs of illness, including reduced appetite, coughing, diarrhoea, injuries/lameness, and abnormal behaviour
- Report symptoms immediately to supervisors and health officers.
- Support isolation procedures when required.
Piglet Care Support (Where Assigned):
- Support farrowing and piglet care activities, such as ensuring piglets have access to colostrum
- Keeping piglets warm and safe
- Assisting with creep feeding
- Cleaning farrowing pens
- Report weak piglets or mortalities immediately.
Biosecurity Compliance (Non-Negotiable):
- Follow strict biosecurity rules, including PPE usage and footbath compliance
- Restricted movement between sections
- No unauthorised visitors or entry into restricted zones
- Report any breach immediately.
Record Support & Task Checklist Compliance:
- Support recordkeeping by providing accurate information to Breeding & Records Officer/Supervisors
- Complete assigned daily checklists and sign off on tasks.
- Do not hide incidents or mortalities.
Animal Handling & Safety:
- Handle pigs safely and humanely under supervision.
- Avoid rough handling that can cause injury, stress, or losses.
- Maintain personal safety and follow instructions for animal restraint.
Daily Work Structure (8-hour expectation):
- Morning: feeding, water checks, pen cleaning and sanitation
- Midday: observation rounds, hygiene follow-up, support breeding/farrowing tasks
- Afternoon: second feeding (if applicable), cleaning completion, report issues
- End-of-day: confirm checklist completion and prepare pens for the next day

- Feeding compliance rate: 100%
- Hygiene checklist completion: 100%
- Early reporting of sick animals: 100%
- Biosecurity compliance: 100%
- Pen cleanliness inspection score: high and consistent
- Incident reporting discipline: 100%
Integrity & Non-Negotiables:
- No theft or diversion of feed, piglets, or farm materials.
- No hiding of mortalities or incidents.
- No unauthorised access to restricted areas.
- Must follow instructions and checklists strictly.
Requirements:
- Minimum SSCE/OND (OND preferred)
- Minimum of 3 years of experience in piggery or livestock operations preferred
- Willingness to learn and follow strict rules and routines
- Physically fit and able to work in farm conditions
- Honest, reliable and disciplined
- Hardworking and consistent
- Good observation skills
- Ability to follow instructions and work in a team
