Job summary

Radseed seeks a mechatronics engineer to build UAV, drone, and agricultural robotics systems—mechanical, electrical, embedded, and autonomous. Requires CAD, prototyping, and hardware troubleshooting skills. Bonus: ArduPilot/PX4, ROS, flight controllers, sensors. Ideal for curious, hands-on engineers ready to own problems end-to-end. This is not a role for someone who wants to spend most of their time producing reports or theoretical designs. We are looking for someone who wants to build. As a Mechatronics / Robotics Engineer, you will work across mechanical, electrical, embedded and autonomous systems to develop Radseed's products and prototypes. You will work closely with the Founder and other engineers to turn product requirements into functioning hardware. You will be expected to take increasing ownership of engineering problems—from defining requirements and designing solutions through prototyping, testing, troubleshooting and documentation.

  • Design and develop electromechanical systems for UAV and robotic applications.
  • Translate product requirements into engineering specifications.
  • Develop mechanical concepts, assemblies, and prototypes.
  • Integrate mechanical, electrical, and embedded components.
  • Support development of UAV platforms, payload systems, and agricultural robotics.
  • Improve existing prototypes based on test results and field feedback.

Engineering & Prototyping:

  • Produce and review CAD designs.
  • Select appropriate mechanical components, materials, and hardware.
  • Build and modify prototypes.
  • Develop mechanisms, mounts, enclosures and structural components.
  • Conduct bench testing and system-level testing.
  • Diagnose failures and implement engineering solutions.

Robotics & Autonomous Systems:

  • Work with flight controllers, sensors, actuators, and communication systems.
  • Support integration of sensors and payloads.
  • Work with systems such as ArduPilot, Pixhawk/Cube, and MAVLink where applicable.
  • Support development and testing of autonomous behaviors.
  • Contribute to ROS/ROS 2-based development where appropriate.

Testing & Documentation:

  • Develop test plans and engineering validation procedures.
  • Record test results and engineering decisions.
  • Analyse failures systematically.
  • Maintain technical documentation and drawings.
  • Establish repeatable assembly and testing procedures.

Engineering Ownership:

  • You will not simply receive tasks.
  • You will be expected to identify engineering problems, propose solutions, explain trade-offs, execute experiments, report findings, and recommend the next step.
  • As you develop within the company, you will take increasing ownership of specific technical systems or product areas.

Requirements:

  • Bachelor's degree in mechatronics engineering, mechanical engineering, robotics engineering, electrical/electronic engineering, or a closely related field.
  • Demonstrable experience building physical engineering systems.
  • Strong mechanical design and prototyping ability.
  • Experience with CAD software such as SolidWorks, Fusion 360 or equivalent.
  • Understanding of motors, actuators, sensors and electromechanical systems.
  • Ability to troubleshoot hardware systematically.
  • Strong engineering fundamentals.
  • Ability to work independently and take ownership of problems.
  • Willingness to work hands-on with prototypes, tools and equipment.Strong

Advantages:

  • Experience with UAVs/drones, ArduPilot/PX4, Pixhawk/Cube flight controllers, MAVLink, ROS/ROS 2, embedded systems, motor control, control systems, autonomous robots, LiDAR/RGB/multispectral sensors, rapid prototyping, 3D printing, CNC, or fabrication
  • Field testing
  • Agricultural technology

The Person We're Looking For:

  • You are probably a good fit if you are the kind of engineer who sees a broken prototype and thinks, "Let me understand why it failed." rather than someone should fix this."
  • We value engineers who are curious, analytical, practical, resourceful, technically rigorous, comfortable with ambiguity,
  • Willing to get their hands dirty,
  • Able to explain technical decisions clearly and capable of learning quickly.
  • We do not expect you to know everything.
  • We do expect you to know how to figure things out.

What Success Looks Like:

  • Within your first six months, you should be able to independently take ownership of defined engineering problems from: requirement → design → prototype → test → failure analysis → iteration → documentation.
  • Over time, we expect you to become one of the people Radseed can rely on to make sound engineering decisions without requiring the founder to personally drive every technical detail.

Why Join Radseed?

  • This is an opportunity to join a small engineering company at a stage where your work can have a visible impact.
  • You will not be a small component in a large engineering organization.
  • You will help shape the products, engineering practices and technical culture of the company.
  • If you want to build real systems, solve difficult problems, and contribute to the development of indigenous robotics technology in Africa, we would like to hear from you.
