Lead Accountant

Responsibilities:

• Oversee the preparation and presentation of accurate financial statements and management reports.
• Supervise and review general ledger activities, ensuring all transactions are properly recorded and reconciled.
• Lead loan accounting processes, including loan disbursements, repayments, interest recognition, and portfolio tracking.
• Conduct periodic financial audits and ensure compliance with internal controls and company policies.
• Ensure timely preparation and submission of statutory and regulatory reports (e.g., VAT, SCUML, and other compliance requirements).
• Monitor and reconcile income, customer repayments, and accounts to ensure accuracy and completeness.
• Review statements of accounts and investigate discrepancies or exceptions.
• Oversee cheque register management, including issued, returned, and unissued cheques
• Prepare budgets, forecasts, and variance analysis to support financial planning.
• Track loan portfolio performance and provide insights on financial risks and opportunities.
• Coordinate internal reporting, such as weekly and monthly activity reports.
• Provide guidance, supervision, and mentoring to junior accounting staff.
• Liaise with external auditors, regulators, and other stakeholders as required.
• Identify opportunities for process improvement and cost efficiency.

Requirements:

• Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field.
• Professional certification (ICAN, ACCA, or equivalent) is an added advantage.
• Minimum of 4 years of relevant accounting experience, preferably in financial services.
• Strong knowledge of accounting principles, financial reporting, and regulatory compliance.
• Experience with loan accounting and portfolio management is highly preferred.
• Proficiency in accounting software and Microsoft Excel.
• Strong analytical, problem-solving, and organizational skills.
• High level of accuracy and attention to detail.

• Strong communication and reporting skills.
