Hardware Engineer
Job summary
We’re looking for a Hardware Engineer to build our Lagos-based R&D function. You’ll prototype, test and improve solar lighting products for demanding African outdoor conditions, working with our London-based Supervising Engineer. You’ll also establish testing and documentation practices and help build the R&D team as we scale.
Job descriptions & requirements
Responsibilities:
- Prototype daily: Build, test, and iterate on solar lighting hardware (drivers, battery integration, enclosures, mounting, etc.) at rapid velocity
- Own reliability: Design and run durability tests for outdoor/environmental conditions (heat, moisture, IP ratings, connector and casing durability)
- Own cost and manufacturability: Design within BOM cost targets and realistic component sourcing, with local/semi-local assembly in mind, not just functional performance
- Document rigorously: Maintain clear BOMs, design files, test logs, and failure analyses so what works, and what doesn't, isn't lost
- Work with our remote supervising engineer: Translate designs and direction from our London-based supervising engineer into working, field-tested prototypes
- Set up the workspace: Establish the in-house prototyping setup, including 3D printing capability
- Build the team: As traction grows, help recruit and mentor additional local R&D hires
- Library Creation and Management: Keeping clean and well-maintained parts libraries for electronic components and 3D models is critical for design
Requirements:
- Minimum qualification of a BSC
- 2 years of previous experience in a similar role
