Field Mechanic / Industrial Generator Technician
Job summary
We are seeking skilled and experienced Field Mechanics / Industrial Generator Technicians with strong diagnostic and troubleshooting abilities to join our team. The successful candidates will be responsible for the installation, servicing, maintenance, repair, testing, and troubleshooting of industrial diesel generator sets at client locations. The role requires strong practical knowledge of diesel engines and generator systems, the ability to diagnose complex faults, and the capacity to work independently on challenging field assignments and emergency breakdowns.

Responsibilities:
- Diagnose and troubleshoot mechanical, electrical, and control faults in industrial diesel generator sets.
- Carry out routine servicing, preventive maintenance, and corrective maintenance.
- Perform engine repairs, major repairs, and complete or partial engine overhauls.
- Troubleshoot and repair fuel, cooling, lubrication, and exhaust systems.
- Diagnose and rectify starting, charging, and electrical control faults.
- Inspect generator sets and identify mechanical, electrical, and operational abnormalities.
- Carry out generator installation, commissioning, testing, and start-up activities when required.
- Conduct load testing, performance checks, and general equipment assessments.
- Respond promptly to emergency breakdown calls and field service assignments.
- Prepare accurate technical and service reports after each job.
- Maintain proper records of faults identified, repairs carried out, parts used, and recommendations.
- Provide technical advice to clients regarding generator condition, maintenance requirements, and potential equipment failures.
- Ensure all maintenance and repair activities are carried out safely and in accordance with required technical and safety standards.
- Maintain professional conduct when working at client locations.
- Work independently while providing timely updates to supervisors and management.
Requirements:
- Proven experience working on industrial diesel generators.
- A minimum of an OND in a related field
- Strong practical fault-finding, diagnostic, and troubleshooting skills.
- Good knowledge of diesel engines, generator systems, and associated components.
- Demonstrable experience in engine overhauling and major mechanical repairs.
- Ability to troubleshoot mechanical faults as well as basic electrical and control system issues.
- Practical experience with preventive and corrective generator maintenance.
- Ability to read and interpret technical manuals, wiring diagrams, and generator control diagrams.
- Ability to effectively use diagnostic tools, testing equipment, and relevant hand tools.
- Ability to work independently with minimal supervision.
- Good communication and customer-service skills.
- Ability to work under pressure and respond effectively to emergency breakdowns and field assignments.
- Strong attention to detail and commitment to safety and quality workmanship.
- A valid driver's licence is an advantage.
