Job Description/Requirements
Responsibilities:
Veterinary & Herd Health
- Design and implement comprehensive herd health protocols for Boer and Kalahari Red goats (vaccination, deworming, disease prevention, biosecurity).
- Diagnose and treat illnesses, injuries, and reproductive disorders promptly.
- Oversee reproductive programs:
- Heat detection, mating plans, kidding management
- Fertility monitoring and reproductive performance analysis
- Implement kidding and kid-rearing protocols to optimize survival, growth, and future productivity.
- Ensure high standards of animal welfare, housing hygiene, and stress management.
Breeding Program & Genetic Improvement
- Collaborate with ownership to plan and execute breeding seasons aligned with MDNI’s genetic goals.
- Use performance data, records, and visual appraisal to recommend:
- Sire and dam selection
- Culling and replacement decisions
- Retention of top-performing doelings and bucks
- Support structured record-keeping on:
- Birth weights, growth rates, fertility, mothering performance
- Health events, treatments, and mortality
- Help maintain MDNI Farms’ standard as a source of reliable, full blood, well-documented breeding stock.
Farm Operations & Resource Management
- Plan and supervise daily farm routines: feeding, watering, cleaning, treatments, kidding checks, and paddock changes.
- Manage feed and nutrition programs to balance performance with cost-effective inputs.
- Ensure effective use and maintenance of infrastructure (pens, shelters, fencing, water systems, storage, etc.).
- Implement and enforce Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) across all major farm activities.
Team Leadership & Training
- Supervise and develop farm staff, ensuring they are trained in proper handling, hygiene, welfare, and basic first aid for goats.
- Assign daily tasks, monitor performance, and drive a culture of accountability and care.
- Conduct regular on-the-job training sessions on goat management and best practices.
Requirements:
- Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM) or HND / BSc in Animal Science
- 3+ years’ experience in livestock practice, ideally with goats or small ruminants.
- Experience in farm management or team supervision is a strong advantage.
- Demonstrated understanding of:
- Reproductive management and kidding
- Goat-specific diseases and preventive programs
- Nutrition for meat goats under Nigerian or similar conditions
- Breeding and selection for performance and adaptability
- Strong leadership and team management capabilities.
- Comfortable balancing clinical work with operational planning and reporting.
- Data-oriented mindset – you value records, trends, and evidence-based decisions.
- Excellent communication skills – able to train farm workers and educate visiting farmers.
- High level of ownership and integrity – you treat the herd and the farm like your own.
- Willingness to live/work on-site, with availability for emergencies and kidding peaks.
