Farm Manager
Job summary
We are seeking a hands-on Farm Operations Manager with strong business acumen, sound judgment, and genuine passion for animal welfare. You must think like an owner, lead from the front, drive efficiency, protect livestock performance, and make the role your own through initiative, discipline, and results.
Job descriptions & requirements
Responsibilities:
- Take direct ownership of the daily feeding program. Be physically present for key feeding periods, verify ration quantities and feed quality, observe intake, check feeders and water points, and ensure every class of goat receives the correct ration on schedule.
- Prepare and enforce clear schedules for feeding, breeding, kidding, weaning, pasture work, cleaning, sanitation and other daily farm activities; ensure staff understand what is expected before work begins.
- Supervise department leads, livestock attendants, field workers, security personnel and contractors; assign work, inspect results, coach staff and close performance gaps quickly.
- Ensure daily livestock records are updated accurately, including feeding, health observations, treatments, births, deaths, breeding, movements, inventory use and other operational records.
- Oversee pasture and crop activities, including forage establishment, harvesting, weed control, irrigation, soil improvement, grazing plans and preservation of feed for periods of shortage.
- Inspect farm infrastructure and equipment routinely; schedule preventive maintenance, repairs and replacement of pens, fences, water systems, machinery, tools, buildings and utilities.
- Maintain strong farm-wide biosecurity, health and safety standards and ensure all workers follow approved SOPs, hygiene rules and animal-handling procedures.
- Prepare operational plans, budgets, purchase requests and management reports, and support ownership in long-term planning and expansion decisions.
- Coordinate external contractors, veterinary support, suppliers and service providers for work or expertise not retained in-house, ensuring scope, cost, quality and timelines are controlled.
Hands-On Leadership Standard:
- The Operations Manager must never supervise feeding only from reports. He or she must regularly be on the ground during feeding, inspect the ration and animals, and correct poor practice immediately.
- The manager must be capable of demonstrating correct feeding, restraint, health-check, sanitation and basic husbandry procedures to staff and new hires.
- When operational pressure is high, animal welfare comes first. The manager is expected to step in and work with the team rather than allow critical husbandry tasks to be delayed.
- Daily management must be proactive: identify tomorrow's feed, staffing, health, maintenance and supply risks before they become emergencies.
Requirements:
- Bachelor’s degree in Animal Science or HND in Animal Sciences, Veterinary Medicine, or a related field.
- Proven experience in Farm Management or a related role.
- Knowledge of budgeting, financial planning, and livestock care.
- Familiarity with agricultural equipment and technology.
- Demonstrated organizational, planning, reporting and record-keeping skills.
- Working knowledge of pasture/forage management, farm infrastructure, equipment and preventive maintenance.
- Strong problem-solving, analytical and critical-thinking skills, with the ability to make sound decisions under pressure.
- Good communication and interpersonal skills; able to give clear instructions, coach workers and hold teams accountable respectfully.
