Our client is seeking an experienced Engineering Manager to lead and develop its Building Services Engineering practice. This is an exciting opportunity for an ambitious engineering professional who is passionate about technical excellence, digital innovation, operational leadership, and developing high-performing teams.

Responsibilities:

Practice Leadership and Technical Strategy:

  • Define and implement the technical vision and engineering standards for a growing mid‑sized firm.
  • Establish practical, efficient best‑practice methodologies for MEP design, digital modelling, sustainability, and building performance.
  • Promote innovation in low‑carbon design, modern digital tools, and coordinated delivery workflows.
  • Ensure compliance with industry regulations (CIBSE, IET, CDM, BSR, building regulations), while keeping processes lean and scalable


Engineering Governance and Quality Assurance

  • Develop simple but robust QA/QC processes suited to a mid‑sized practice, ensuring consistent, high‑quality deliverables across teams.
  • Conduct or coordinate technical reviews, design audits, and risk assessments.
  • Implement measurable quality standards without over‑burdening project teams.
  • Support teams in resolving technical issues quickly and pragmatically.


Digital Engineering Tools & Technology Leadership

  • Lead the digital engineering roadmap for the firm, balancing innovation with practicality and budget constraints.
  • Oversee adoption and optimisation of core tools:
  • BIM/Modelling: Revit, AutoCAD
  • Lighting & Electrical: Dialux, Relux
  • MEP Design Tools: H2X Engineering
  • Establish fit‑for‑purpose BIM standards, BEPs, naming conventions, and model checks.
  • Promote ISO 19650 principles without unnecessary overhead.
  • Drive practical improvements such as automation scripts, template efficiency, and plug‑ins.
  • Identify digital skills gaps and lead upskilling initiatives across engineering teams.
  • Manage tool licences and digital investments aligned with firm growth.


Capability Building & Team Development:

  • Mentor engineers, discipline leads, and digital specialists, providing accessible technical direction.
  • Develop realistic competency frameworks and career paths suited to a mid‑sized consultancy structure.
  • Support staff toward professional registration (CEng, IEng, EngTech).
  • Build a culture of collaboration, accountability, and continuous improvement across the practice.
  • Promote knowledge sharing through playbooks, lunch‑and‑learns, and internal communities.


Project Delivery Support & Technical Oversight:

  • Provide hands-on support to project teams during concept design, coordination, and technical resolution.
  • Step into key projects when specialist expertise, client assurance, or risk management is required.
  • Assist project managers in scoping, resource planning, and delivery planning.
  • Ensure technical solutions remain commercially viable and aligned with client priorities.


Client & Stakeholder Engagement:

  • Represent the engineering practice in client meetings, workshops, coordination sessions, and design reviews.
  • Provide clear, confident, and pragmatic technical advice to clients and partners.
  • Build collaborative working relationships with architects, structural engineers, contractors, and specialists.
  • Support business development by contributing technical input to proposals, fee bids, and client strategies.


Operational, Resource & Financial Management:

  • Oversee resource allocation across multiple projects, balancing workload and skills.
  • Support recruitment planning, onboarding, and talent retention.
  • Manage budgets for engineering tools, training, and digital capability development.
  • Track KPIs including delivery quality, digital adoption, engineering throughput, and commercial performance.
  • Lead continuous improvement and process optimisation initiatives


Success Measures

  • Consistently high‑quality engineering output with reduced rework.
  • Clear, scalable engineering standards adopted across all teams.
  • Measurable uplift in digital engineering maturity and tool efficiency.
  • Strong team development, professional progression, and retention.
  • Increased project delivery predictability and client satisfaction.
  • Improved collaboration, transparency, and consistency across engineering disciplines.


Requirements:

  • An Engineering Degree and holding Chartered Engineer status, Chartered Engineer (CEng) COREN, IMechE, or IET.
  • Experience in digital transformation or uplift initiatives in mid‑sized organisations.
  • Familiarity with sustainability frameworks such as BREEAM, LEED, WELL, and net‑zero design approaches.
  • Previous experience in resource management, financial planning, or operational leadership.
  • Extensive experience in Civil/Structural or building services engineering within a consulting environment.
  • Substantial experience leading multi-discipline engineering teams.(2-5 years in a leadership or management role)
  • Strong knowledge of MEP is an advantage, with the ability to guide multidisciplinary teams.
  • Proven ability to set engineering standards and drive technical excellence.
  • Strong understanding of BIM, digital engineering workflows, and simulation tools.
  • Effective communicator with strong leadership and stakeholder‑management skills.
  • Experience working across multiple building sectors (commercial, residential, healthcare, education, etc.).
  • Management Skills: Proven ability in Leadership, Budget Control, Programme Control, and Quality Control regimes.
  • Technical Acumen: Ability to translate ideas into actions and results and get the best out of others.
  • Prior experience in Project Management.
  • Knowledge of the Design lifecycle from Concept to Commissioning.
  • Experience in Mechanical, Electrical, or Public Health Engineering within a high-rise or complex building environment.
