Role Description

The Engine Room Superintendent heads the FSO engine room operations; he is directly responsible for the operation of all main and auxiliary machinery systems, including engine control room (ECR) operations. He will supervise all aspects of maintenance requirements in the Engine Room in conjunction with FSO Maintenance Supervisor. Specific areas of responsibilities will include:

•⁠ ⁠Supervision and Training of all ECR operations personnel under the Company Competency Assurance program

•⁠ ⁠Prompt and efficient reporting of all defects that may affect the safety or operational efficiency of the FSO

•⁠ ⁠Oversee operation and maintenance of all mechanical equipment, including engines, boilers, compressors, turbines, pumps, separators, HVAC systems and others

•⁠ ⁠Supervise maintenance in line with OEM manuals, class rules, and safety standards.

•⁠ ⁠Execute preventive, predictive, and corrective maintenance strategies to ensure equipment continuous availability.

•⁠ ⁠Monitor critical systems including power generation, inert gas, cargo offloading, SW Cooling, firewater systems, etc.

•⁠ ⁠Lead and enforce PTW systems, safety talks, JSA reviews, and hazard assessments.

•⁠ ⁠Interpret P&IDs, OEM documents, and technical drawings for troubleshooting and repairs.

•⁠ ⁠Direct daily activities of Engine Room staff, technicians and third-party contractors in normal operations and during shutdowns or critical maintenance.

•⁠ ⁠Support the Material Coordinator in spare parts inventory and procurement processes.

•⁠ ⁠Participate in Root Cause Failure Analyses and incident investigations.

•⁠ ⁠Coordinate with Maintenance and Deck Operations Teams on integrated operations.

•⁠ ⁠Support commissioning, start-up, and testing of overhauled or new equipment and mechanical systems.

•⁠ ⁠Maintain logs, equipment history records, and daily operational reports.

•⁠ ⁠Ensure emergency systems (e.g., fire pumps, Emergency Generator) are always ready for deployment.

•⁠ ⁠Mentor junior engineers and ER staff to support skill development.


Qualifications

  • Class I (Unlimited) Chief Engineer Certificate of Competency (CoC) in accordance with STCW requirements.
  • Minimum of 10 years' experience as Chief Engineer on steam-driven VLCCs, FSOs, FPSOs, or similar offshore marine vessels.
  • Proven experience managing engine room operations, power generation systems, boilers, turbines, pumps, compressors, HVAC, and auxiliary machinery.
  • Strong knowledge of planned maintenance systems (PMS), preventive and corrective maintenance, and equipment reliability management.
  • Good understanding of SOLAS, MARPOL, ISM Code, Class Society requirements, and Flag State regulations.
  • Demonstrated leadership experience supervising engine room personnel and managing contractors in offshore or marine environments.
  • Experience with Permit to Work (PTW), Job Safety Analysis (JSA), Risk Assessment, Lock-Out/Tag-Out (LOTO), and other HSE management systems.
  • Ability to read and interpret P&IDs, engineering drawings, OEM manuals, and technical documentation.
  • Experience supporting commissioning, equipment start-up, troubleshooting, and Root Cause Failure Analysis (RCFA).
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office and Computerized Maintenance Management Systems (CMMS).
  • Excellent communication, leadership, planning, and problem-solving skills.
  • Valid STCW certification and a valid seafarer's medical certificate.
  • Offshore certifications such as BOSIET/FOET with CA-EBS and a valid offshore medical certificate will be an added advantage.
  • Must be eligible to work in Nigeria.
