Job summary

The Design Engineer is responsible for the design, development, optimization, quality control, and production oversight of furniture products for manufacturing. The role involves creating functional, aesthetically appealing, cost-effective, and manufacturable furniture designs while ensuring compliance with quality, safety, and production standards

Job descriptions & requirements

Responsibilities:

Furniture Design & Product Development:

  • Develop detailed furniture designs, concepts, and technical solutions based on customer requirements, market trends, and company standards.
  • Create 2D technical drawings, 3D CAD models, assemblies, and production documentation.
  • Design furniture products including tables, cabinets, wardrobes, office furniture, kitchen units, upholstery frames, and custom furniture systems.
  • Optimize designs for manufacturability, assembly, durability, functionality, aesthetics, and cost efficiency.
  • Modify and improve existing products to enhance performance, quality, and production efficiency.
  • Develop standardized product dimensions and modular systems where applicable.


Technical Documentation & Materials:

  • Prepare production-ready drawings, Bills of Materials (BOMs), cutting lists, hardware schedules, and material specifications.
  • Select appropriate materials, hardware, fittings, finishes, and manufacturing processes.
  • Evaluate alternative materials and components to improve quality and reduce cost and material wastage.
  • Maintain accurate design records, revision histories, and engineering documentation.


Production & Quality Control:

  • Work closely with production teams to ensure products are manufactured according to approved designs, specifications, and quality standards.
  • Provide technical support during prototyping, production, assembly, and installation.
  • Conduct production feasibility checks and quality inspections at key stages of the manufacturing process.
  • Identify and resolve fabrication, assembly, design, and quality issues.
  • Monitor production for defects, rework, material wastage, and inefficiencies, and recommend corrective actions and improvements.
  • Support machine setup, jig/fixture development, process optimization, and production standardization where required.


Collaboration & Continuous Improvement:

  • Collaborate with sales, architects, interior designers, procurement, production, and project teams on product development and execution.
  • Liaise with suppliers and vendors regarding materials, fittings, and technical specifications.
  • Participate in design reviews, root cause analysis, and corrective action initiatives.
  • Recommend design and production improvements that enhance quality, efficiency, cost-effectiveness, and customer satisfaction.
  • Support lean manufacturing and continuous improvement initiatives.

Requirements:

  • A minimum of HND in Mechanical Engineering, Industrial Design, Product Design, Furniture Design, Manufacturing Engineering & Related Engineering or Design field
  • 2–5 years' experience in furniture design, product development, or manufacturing engineering.
  • Experience in furniture production or woodworking environments is an advantage.
  • Experience with production quality control or manufacturing oversight is an added advantage.


Technical Skills:

  • Proficiency in CAD software such as: SolidWorks, AutoCAD, SketchUp & Fusion 360
  • Strong understanding of furniture construction methods and joinery techniques.
  • Knowledge of manufacturing processes including cutting, machining, welding, upholstery, and finishing.
  • Ability to prepare BOMs, technical drawings, and production documentation.
  • Basic understanding of CNC manufacturing processes is an added advantage.
  • Knowledge of materials such as plywood, MDF, HDF, hardwood, laminates, veneers, foam, fabrics, and metal sections.
  • Basic knowledge of quality control and production inspection processes.
