Cosmetic Formulator
Job summary
The Cosmetic Formulator is the scientific and creative engine behind KAMBI Cosmetics product range. This role is responsible for developing, refining and validating skincare formulations that are safe, efficacious and tailored to the needs of all skin types and particular focus on pregnant, postpartum and maternity skin concerns.

Responsibilities:
Formulation Development:
- Develop new formulations and conduct structured reviews of existing ones across KAMBI Cosmetics' full product range, including, but not limited to: cleansers, moisturisers, serums, elasticity oils, masks and maternity treatments.
- Apply in-depth knowledge of ingredient functionality, compatibility and stability to create formulations that are both clinically effective for all skin types and also pregnancy-safe.
- Research novel ingredients, actives and emerging cosmetic technologies; translate findings into viable product concepts aligned with the brand's positioning and values.
- Collaborate with the Head of Operations, Clinical Coordinator and Founder to ensure formulations meet brand objectives, clinical testing requirements and regulatory standards.
Ingredient Selection & Evaluation:
- Source and evaluate raw materials and active ingredients, considering
efficacy, safety, stability, cost-effectiveness and suitability for sensitive
and pregnancy-safe skin profiles.
- Conduct ingredient compatibility assessments to confirm formulation integrity
and prevent adverse interactions prior to production.
- Stay current on ingredient regulations, emerging safety data,
sustainability considerations and NAFDAC-relevant restrictions; integrate this
knowledge into all product decisions.
- Evaluate and recommend appropriate packaging and container types for each formulation, taking into account preservation requirements, airless packaging needs and product integrity over shelf-life.
Testing & Optimisation:
- Design and execute stability testing protocols to assess product shelf-life and performance under varying conditions, including temperature, light and humidity.
- Lead formulation optimisation cycles, refining texture, fragrance, absorption and sensory profile based on stability outcomes, QC feedback and clinical tester responses.
- Work closely with the Clinical Coordinator to review participant feedback and incorporate user outcome data into formulation improvement decisions.
- Collaborate with the QC Officer to ensure all final formulations meet agreed quality specifications and pass all pre-production checks before sign-off.
Documentation & Regulatory Compliance:
- Maintain detailed, version-controlled records of all formulation development activities, including full ingredient lists, batch formulas, reformulation histories and testing results.
- Prepare and maintain a comprehensive Formulation Record for every product, documenting all ingredients, exact measurements, batch ratios, formulation processes and any changes made.
- Records must be updated monthly or immediately following any formulation change and submitted to the Admin Officer for filing. These records must be complete, clearly written and ready for review by the Head of Operations and Founder at any time.
- Ensure all formulations comply with NAFDAC regulations, relevant Nigerian cosmetic safety standards and internationally recognised guidelines where applicable.
- Assist in the preparation of regulatory submissions, product dossiers and labelling compliance documentation as required.
- Work with the Admin Officer to ensure all formulation documentation is properly filed, tracked, and accessible for audits or regulatory review.
Continuous Learning & Professional Development:
- Maintain active awareness of advancements in cosmetic chemistry, dermatology, ingredient science and maternity skincare through literature review, seminars and industry publications.
- Proactively bring new ingredient opportunities, product improvement ideas, or safety insights to the Head of Operations and Founder.
- Participate in periodic internal knowledge-sharing to keep the wider team informed on formulation changes, ingredient updates and safety considerations relevant to the product range.
Requirements:
- Degree or diploma in Cosmetic Chemistry, Chemistry, Pharmacy, Biochemistry, or a closely related scientific field.
- Minimum of 3–6 years of hands-on formulation experience in skincare or cosmetics.
- Working knowledge of NAFDAC cosmetic regulations and product registration requirements.
- Experience formulating for all skin types, including sensitive skin, pregnancy-safe, or dermatologically-tested product lines, is a strong advantage.
- Proficiency in maintaining technical documentation, batch records, and stability testing logs.
- Familiarity with a range of cosmetic ingredient categories, including emollients, humectants, active ingredients, preservatives, and surfactants.
