AI Backend Engineer - Agentic AI & Knowledge Systems - Internship

We are building AI tools to digitize offline realities
We are looking for an ambitious AI Backend Engineer to join the team building Uwaci.
This role is suited to an engineer who enjoys building at the intersection of backend systems, LLMs, agentic AI, knowledge systems and real-world execution.
Core Competencies
1. Python & FastAPI Backend Engineering
Strong experience with Python, FastAPI, REST APIs, asynchronous programming, databases and production-quality backend architecture.
2. LLM & Agentic AI Engineering
Experience integrating LLMs and building AI-powered systems involving structured outputs, function/tool calling, agent workflows, context and state management, reasoning/execution loops and failure recovery.
3. RAG, Knowledge & Data Engineering
Experience with PostgreSQL/Supabase, embeddings, vector or semantic search, retrieval-augmented generation (RAG), knowledge modelling, provenance/evidence handling and structured data.
4. API Integration, AI Evaluation & Reliability
Ability to integrate external and internal APIs, implement authentication and permissions, evaluate AI behaviour, build reliable tests, debug complex workflows and design retries, fallbacks and observability.
