Job summary

The Welder / Steel Fabricator is responsible for carrying out welding, cutting, fabrication, assembly, and installation of steel components and fire protection system pipework in accordance with approved drawings, specifications, project requirements, quality standards, and safety procedures.

Job descriptions & requirements

Responsibilities:

  • Report to the assigned work area on time.
  • Inspect tools and equipment before use.
  • Confirm availability of required materials.
  • Complete assigned fabrication and welding activities.
  • Monitor the quality of completed work.
  • Minimize material wastage.
  • Maintain a clean and safe work area.
  • Report progress, challenges, and material requirements to the Mechanical Supervisor.


Welding & Fabrication:

  • Carry out welding and fabrication works on fire protection pipework, steel supports, brackets, frames, and other structural components as required.
  • Perform welding using appropriate processes, including SMAW/arc welding and other applicable welding methods.
  • Cut, fit, align, tack, and weld pipes and steel components according to approved drawings and specifications.
  • Fabricate pipe supports, brackets, base frames, sleeves, clamps, and other steel components required for project execution.
  • Ensure accurate measurements, dimensions, alignment, and levels before and during fabrication.
  • Perform grinding, finishing, and dressing of completed welds where required.


Drawing & Technical Interpretation:

  • Read and interpret engineering drawings, fabrication drawings, dimensions, welding symbols, and installation details.
  • Work from approved drawings and instructions provided by the Mechanical Supervisor or Project Engineer.
  • Identify discrepancies or unclear details in drawings and seek clarification before commencing affected work.
  • Ensure fabricated components correspond with the approved design and site requirements.


Fire Protection Installation Support:

  • Support the installation of sprinkler, hydrant, hose reel, fire suppression, and associated mechanical piping systems.
  • Carry out pipe fabrication and welding in accordance with the approved installation methodology.
  • Assist with pipe alignment, positioning, supports, and installation.
  • Ensure welded joints and fabricated components are suitable for subsequent inspection and testing.


Material Management:

  • Use welding materials, pipes, electrodes, steel sections, fittings, and other consumables responsibly.
  • Minimize material wastage during cutting and fabrication.
  • Account for materials received for assigned work.
  • Report material shortages, damaged materials, or unsuitable materials to the Mechanical Supervisor.
  • Return unused or reusable materials to the designated storage area.
  • Maintain proper cleaning around fabrication and work areas.


Quality Control:

  • Ensure all welding and fabrication works meet approved project specifications and required quality standards.
  • Inspect completed welds for visible defects, including cracks, porosity, undercut, poor penetration, and incomplete fusion.
  • Correct defective welds promptly when instructed.
  • Ensure proper fit-up and alignment before final welding.
  • Cooperate with Project Engineers and QA/QC personnel during inspections and testing.
  • Avoid unauthorized modifications to approved designs.


Health, Safety & Environmental:

  • Comply strictly with company HSE policies and site safety procedures.
  • Use appropriate PPE at all times, including a welding helmet, gloves, safety boots, protective clothing, and eye protection.
  • Obtain and comply with applicable Hot Work Permit requirements before commencing welding activities.
  • Ensure appropriate fire prevention measures and fire watch arrangements are in place during hot work.
  • Inspect welding machines, cables, gas cylinders, regulators, hoses, and other equipment before use.
  • Maintain a safe distance from combustible materials and other hazardous operations.
  • Report unsafe conditions, incidents, near misses, and defective equipment immediately.


Tools & Equipment Management:

  • Operate welding machines, grinders, cutting machines, drilling machines, and other fabrication equipment safely and correctly.
  • Conduct basic pre-use inspections of tools and equipment.
  • Report faulty or damaged equipment immediately.
  • Ensure tools and equipment are properly stored after use.
  • Prevent unauthorized use or misuse of company tools and equipment.


Teamwork & Site Coordination:

  • Work closely with Mechanical Supervisors, Pipe Fitters, Engineers, Electricians, and other project personnel.
  • Follow daily work instructions and meet agreed production targets.
  • Assist less-experienced welders and fabricators where required.
  • Maintain professional conduct and good working relationships with colleagues and subcontractors.


Testing & Inspection Support:

  • Support pressure testing and other inspection activities where required.
  • Rectify welding or fabrication defects identified during inspection.
  • Ensure fabricated pipe sections and components are ready for inspection before installation or testing.
  • Cooperate with inspectors, engineers, and client representatives during quality inspections.


Requirements:

  • Minimum qualification of an SSCE
  • 3 years of previous experience in a similar role
