Role Description The Volunteer Mentor will provide one-on-one and small-group guidance to young people, offering encouragement, listening to their concerns, and supporting their personal and academic development. This is a volunteer, on-site role based in Owerri, requiring regular in-person meetings and participation in scheduled activities. Day-to-day responsibilities include meeting with assigned mentees, helping them set goals, supporting homework or skill-building activities, and engaging in constructive conversations. The Volunteer Mentor will also collaborate with staff and other volunteers, attend training sessions, follow safeguarding and child protection guidelines, and help create a respectful and inclusive environment for all participants.
Qualifications
- Strong interpersonal, active listening, and communication skills to build trust and rapport with young people.
- Demonstrated empathy, patience, and emotional maturity when working with diverse youth backgrounds and experiences.
- Ability to set appropriate boundaries, maintain confidentiality, and adhere to organizational policies and safeguarding standards.
- Reliable, punctual, and able to commit to a consistent volunteer schedule in Owerri.
- Previous experience in mentoring, tutoring, youth work, teaching, counseling, or community service is an advantage but not required.
- Basic organizational skills to plan sessions, track progress, and communicate effectively with program staff.
- Willingness to undergo background checks, reference checks, and required training provided by The Boy Foundation.
