Job Summary

A mud engineer, also known as a drilling fluid engineer, is a member of the drilling rig crew that ensures the drilling fluids (also known as mud or drilling mud) properties meet the designed and operational specifications. Mud engineers design and build drilling fluids pumped into the wellbore to lubricate, cool, and remove any debris around the drill bit. Mud engineers are responsible for mixing, testing, and controlling drilling fluids during the drilling process. They thoroughly investigate the soil and combine the geological information from geologists to create and recommend drilling fluids to meet the planned well objectives.

Job Description/Requirements

Responsibilities: Mud engineers are responsible for mixing, testing, and controlling drilling fluids during the drilling process. They thoroughly investigate the soil and combine the geological information from geologists to create and recommend drilling fluids to meet the planned well objectives.

Their responsibilities include the following:

  • Controls the technology to prepare the drilling mud
  • Monitors the drilling fluid mud cleaning system’s operation
  • Participates in the optimization of the flushing fluids, and cleaning equipment modes of operation
  • Recommends optimal operating modes for cleaning fluid stages
  • Ensures the biopolymer fluid parameters comply with work plans
  • Recommends treatment of drilling fluid with reagents
  • Recommends the replacement of drilling fluid to maintain optimal parameters and drilling fluid system properties
  • Ensures compliance with labor discipline and technological and safety regulations
  • Complies with the requirements for non-disclosure of confidential information 
  • Minimizes waste associated with draining fluids
  • Works with drilling engineers and technicians to ensure a cost-effective drilling process
  • Measures the right amount of mud needed at all stages
  • Assists technicians during the drilling process
  • Provide input in the selection of drill bits


Requirements: Mud/Drilling fluid Engineer will typically have certain prerequisite skills or qualifications, which include but not limited to:

Added qualifications will be an advantage.

 

Qualifications:

  • Education: Bachelor’s degree in engineering, preferably in Petroleum, Mechanical or Chemical Engineering, pure since or any engineering field.
  • Specialized knowledge: Thorough knowledge of various kinds of software, organization, time management.
  • Proficient with computers and other standard office technology.
  • Superior organizational and communication skills.
  • Possess the ability to work productively, efficiently & effectively with initiative and drive under tight timescales and pressure whilst maintaining attention to detail and quality


Skills: 
A drilling engineer must have the following skills;

  • In-depth knowledge of mud formulations skills, basic Knowledge of drilling equipment, Project Management Skills, Technical skills in fluid mechanics, Problem Solving Skills, Safety Skills, Communication Skills, Data Analysis Skills
  • Knowledge of Regulations and Standards
  • Abilities:  multitask, Attention to detail, work under pressure
  • Professional Certification: Related professional certifications will be an added advantage
  • Bachelor’s degree in chemical, mineral, or petroleum engineering or other relevant fields
  • Necessary medical certificates
  • Valid Well Control Certification
  • HUET, Basic Firefighting, Water Survival, and FAST training
  • Offshore survival course certification, such as the Basic Offshore Safety Induction and Emergency Training Certificate (BOSIET)
  • Minimum Industry Safety Training (MIST) certificates

   

 Experience:

  • Minimum of 5 years’ experience (with a strong preference for 7 years’ plus experience) as a drilling engineer or foreman in the conventional oil industry or a major international oil operator.
  • Minimum of 5 years working as an operations drilling engineer with at least 1-year cumulative time working on a rig as a Drilling Engineer or Drilling Supervisor/Foreman or equivalent
  • Other characteristics: Possess the willingness to learn, improve and adapt. Have a detailed understanding of mud engineering.

 

Other Requirements:

 A Mud Engineer must have the following skills:

  • Expert knowledge of fluid systems, drilling fluids, and drilling bits
  • Knowledge of safety protocols and environmental regulations
  • Ability to create detailed mud logs
  • Knowledge of different drilling contaminants, additives, and mud treatment 
  • Proficient understanding of waste management
  • Technical knowledge in mathematics, physics, geology, and chemistry
  • Knowledge of various extraction techniques
  • Strong IT skills
  • Interpretational and cooperation skills
  • Strong communication skills
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills
  • Ability to work well under pressure and in a fast-paced environment


Working conditions

  • The status is full time, OFFICE BASED at-will employment; your jurisdiction is in Rivers state (office work)

Physical requirements

  • Proven Physical ability to lift 10-25 pounds and sit, climb, balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, and crawl repeatedly
  • Ability to sit and/or stand for extended periods of time.
  • Occasional walking to assist or meet with clients and colleagues at various locations.
  • Continuous clarity of vision at 20 inches or less for normal processing of work.
  • Repetitive use of hands such as grasping, twisting/turning of wrists, and finger dexterity necessary to perform various clerical duties such as typing, writing, and maintaining files.
  • Occasional use of arms such as pushing/pulling to open and close drawers and cabinets.
  • Occasional bending and/or reaching for supplies, etc. on both low and high shelves.

 Operational performance: Achieve a minimum of 95% operational accuracy
