Job descriptions & requirements

Location: Field-based (Nasarawa, Benue, Plateau, Gombe, Kwara, and Porthacourt)

Reports to: Operations Manager

Role Summary

Carogas Services Limited seeks an experienced Site Geologist with a strong operations background to lead field geology across our solid minerals portfolio, with primary focus on barite, lead, and zinc. The successful candidate will combine hands-on mine-site experience with technical rigour, overseeing exploration, resource delineation, grade control, and production geology across multiple field locations in Nigeria's mineral belts.

Key Responsibilities

  • Coordinate barite trading and sourcing, including identifying and evaluating ore from artisanal and third-party miners, negotiating purchase, and organising haulage of ore to the milling site.
  • Manage day-to-day site geology at active mining and exploration sites, including pit mapping, face sampling, and grade control.
  • Supervise drilling programmes (RC, diamond, and pitting) and log core and cuttings.
  • Direct sampling protocols, sample preparation, and chain-of-custody for dispatch to independent laboratories.
  • Delineate and estimate mineral resources, and maintain up-to-date geological models and reserve records.
  • Conduct ore-body characterisation and monitor grade and quality against specification.
  • Liaise with mining crews to optimise extraction, minimise dilution, and sequence production.
  • Oversee site QA/QC, including reconciliation of field data against laboratory results.
  • Ensure compliance with the Nigerian Minerals and Mining Act and site HSE requirements.
  • Prepare technical reports, resource statements, and progress updates for management and regulators.

Required Qualifications and Experience

  • B.Sc, M.Sc. in Mineral Geology, Economic Geology, Applied Geology, or a closely related earth-science discipline.
  • Minimum of 10 years' post-qualification experience, with a substantial portion in hands-on minerals operations rather than office-based roles.
  • Demonstrable field experience across Nigerian mineral-producing regions such as Port Harcourt, Nasarawa, Jos/Plateau, Gombe, Benue, and Kwara.
  • Proven track record with solid minerals, specifically barite, lead, and zinc (Pb-Zn vein systems of the Benue Trough is an advantage).
  • Strong grasp of grade control, resource estimation, and mine-site sampling protocols.
  • Working knowledge of API 13A barite specifications and beneficiation processes.
  • Proficiency in geological software (e.g. Surfer, ArcGIS/QGIS, Micromine or Datamine) and MS Office.

Required Competencies

Strong operational leadership and ability to work independently at remote sites. Sound QA/QC discipline and attention to data integrity. Good report-writing and communication skills. Willingness to travel and be based at field locations for extended periods.
