Cinematographers (or Directors of Photography/DPs) lead the visual look of films/videos, managing camera, lighting, and crew to translate scripts into images, while related video roles include Camera Operators, Gaffers (lighting), Grips (rigging), Focus Pullers (1st ACs), Clapper Loaders (2nd ACs), DITs (Digital Imaging Techs), Data Wranglers, and Video Editors, all working under the DP to capture and assemble footage for movies, TV, ads, or online content.
Roles
Cinematographer / Director of Photography (DP): Oversees all visual aspects, chooses equipment (cameras, lenses, lights), directs lighting and camera crews, and collaborates with the director to create the overall look.
Camera Operator: Physically operates the camera, framing shots and executing movement as directed by the DP.
First Assistant Camera (1st AC) / Focus Puller: Maintains the camera, sets focus, and manages camera equipment.
Second Assistant Camera (2nd AC) / Clapper Loader: Operates the clapperboard and loads film/media into cameras.
Digital Imaging Technician (DIT): Manages digital workflow, oversees image quality, performs on-set color correction, and handles data management.
Data Wrangler: Transfers and organizes footage from media cards to hard drives.
Gaffer: Chief lighting technician, responsible for executing the DP's lighting plan.
Grip: Sets up rigging and support equipment for lights and cameras (e.g., dollies, cranes).
Other Key Video & Production Roles
Video Editor: Assembles raw footage, adds effects, sound, and transitions to create the final product, often working with rough cuts from the DP/Director.
Director: The creative lead, guiding the overall artistic vision, with the DP translating that vision into visuals.
Production Designer: Oversees the entire look of the set, props, and costumes.
Assistant Director (AD): Manages the set schedule and logistics.
Script Supervisor: Ensures continuity between shots and scenes.
Specialised Video Roles (Videographer)
Videographer: Often a broader role, especially in corporate/event settings, handling shooting, editing, live streaming, and content creation for social media, events, or corporate comms.
