AIxBioAfrica is an emerging African research and learning initiative focused on artificial intelligence, biosecurity, biotechnology governance, and emerging biological risks. We are building a community of researchers, students, and professionals interested in understanding how AI and biological systems may shape Africa’s future and global catastrophic risk discussions.
Our work includes fellowships, research discussions, mentorship, reading groups, collaborative projects, and community-building programs that encourage thoughtful African participation in global conversations on AI safety and biosecurity.
About the Mentorship Program
The AIxBioAfrica Research Mentorship Program is a volunteer-based remote mentorship opportunity designed for students and early-career individuals interested in AI safety, biosecurity, biotechnology governance, public health, or related fields.
This is a lightweight and flexible learning-focused program rather than a formal employment role. Participants will be paired with mentors or research leads for guidance, discussions, and occasional collaborative support.
The program is designed to help participants:
- Explore research interests
- Learn how to read and understand academic or policy papers
- Develop research and communication skills
- Join conversations around AI, biosecurity, and emerging risks from African perspectives
- Become part of a growing interdisciplinary community
What Participation Looks Like
Participants may:
- Attend short virtual check-ins with mentors (sometimes as brief as 10–20 minutes)
- Assist with simple literature reviews or background research
- Join reading groups, workshops, or discussion sessions
- Help summarize articles, papers, or policy reports
- Contribute ideas to small collaborative projects
- Share learning progress and reflections with the community
The program is flexible and intended to fit around school, work, or other commitments.

Preferred Qualities

Basic research, writing, or organizational skills are helpful but not required.
