Job Summary

We're looking for an experienced Accountant to join our small team (we already have one Lagos Accountant on our team who has been with us for 6 months). We're based in the UK and operate under two brands – Virtual Focus Accountants and Velanta Solutions (accounting services for UK businesses). You will be supporting a client manager in the UK with bookkeeping for UK clients on Quickbooks and Xero. There will also be Accounting activity including Accounts preparation, Corporation Tax, Income Tax, VAT and CIS. You will be given training and support to help you bookkeeping and accounting for clients and therefore being a quick learner will help. The work will surround our practice initially but we are building out the offshore arm to support UK accounting businesses. This expansion will require additional resources so this role will provide management opportunities if you progression shows this capability. It is an exciting opportunity for someone who is diligent, has a strong accounting/bookkeeping foundation and knowledge accounting systems.

Job Description/Requirements



  • Recording financial transactions and ensuring accuracy.
  • Reconciling bank statements.
  • Maintaining up-to-date records of invoices, payments, and receipts.

Accounts Preparation:

  • Preparing monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements.
  • Assisting in the year-end financial closing process.
  • Generating and analyzing financial reports as required.

Value Added Tax (VAT):

  • Preparing and filing VAT returns in compliance with relevant laws.
  • Advising clients on VAT-related queries.
  • Keeping up-to-date with VAT regulations and any changes therein.

Journal Management:

  • Booking and reviewing journal entries to ensure accurate representation of the company's financial position.
  • Rectifying any discrepancies or inaccuracies in the financial data.

Client Relations:

  • Communicating with clients to gather financial data and provide updates.
  • Addressing and resolving any financial or accounting queries from clients.

Continuous Learning & Development:

  • Keeping up-to-date with the latest accounting standards, best practices, and regulations.
  • Attending workshops, courses, or seminars to enhance professional competence


  • At least 3 years experience of bookkeeping and accounting, have a degree or similar accounting qualification.
  • Minimum academic qualification of HND/BSc degree in accounting
  • Detail-oriented with a focus on accuracy and efficiency.
  • Strong organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple tasks simultaneously.
  • High degree of integrity, confidentiality, and professionalism.
  • Team player with a proactive approach to problem-solving.
  • An understanding of the UK accounting principles is not mandatory but is very welcome.
  • You will be comfortable using zoom to have daily calls your manager and become part of the team.
  • Experience of Quickbooks or Xero is useful as well as a good level of Excel as we still use it quiet a bit. 
  • Ideally you will have experience of working in a UK accounting firm or for UK clients but this is not mandatory. What is key is a good grasp of accounting concepts, a confident attitude, ability to grasp the processes when you are being trained.

  • Zoom

Your working hours: The office location will be Lekki Lagos but a hybrid position will be ideal.

  • You need to be in a position to do some work remotely with a laptop and headset.
  • We are flexible around the hours but usually the hours would be in line with full time UK working hours between 9am - 5pm (GMT)

Holidays: We honor all Nigerian holidays in addition to 21 days per year
