Job summary

The Accounts Payable Officer is responsible for managing all outgoing payments of the organisation, ensuring that vendor invoices, contractor claims, and operational expenses are processed accurately, efficiently, and in compliance with company policies. In the oil and gas environment, this role is critical in managing high-volume vendor transactions involving services, equipment suppliers, logistics providers, and international contractors.

Job descriptions & requirements

Responsibilities:

  • Receive, verify, and process vendor invoices, contractor payment certificates, and purchase orders in a timely manner.
  • Ensure proper three-way matching of purchase orders, goods received notes (GRN), and supplier invoices before processing payments.
  • Prepare payment runs (NEFT, SWIFT, cheques) in accordance with approved payment schedules and cash flow plans.
  • Maintain an accurate and up-to-date vendor ledger, reconciling accounts regularly to avoid duplicate or erroneous payments.
  • Manage relationships with vendors and contractors, resolving invoice disputes, short payments, and queries promptly.
  • Ensure all statutory deductions (WHT, VAT) are correctly applied on vendor payments and promptly remitted to FIRS.
  • Prepare monthly AP ageing reports and outstanding creditor schedules for management review.\
  • Process staff expense claims and travel advances in line with company policy.
  • Maintain complete, organized, and audit-ready documentation for all payments processed.
  • Liaise with the Procurement team to resolve PO discrepancies and coordinate approvals on contract variations.
  • Support month-end close activities by ensuring all payables are accurately accrued and reported.
  • Assist in the preparation of supporting schedules for external and internal audits.


Requirements:

  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related discipline.
  • Professional certification in view or completed (ICAN, ACCA) is an advantage.
  • Minimum of 3–5 years of accounts payable experience, preferably in the oil and gas, energy, or engineering sector.
  • Familiarity with WHT and VAT obligations under Nigerian tax law.
  • Proficiency in accounting software (Tally, Oracle, or similar) and Microsoft Excel)
