Job Description

USAID-funded Opportunities to Learn (OTL) project aims to address the immediate education need of out-of-school children (OOSC) and youth in 17 Local Government Areas (LGAs), in Borno, Adamawa and Yobe states, through safer new and existing non-formal-education, while laying the groundwork for sustainable improvement of education systems at the community and government levels. OTL aims to ensure out-of-school children and youth in Northeastern Nigeria are safely able to gain foundational skills, including literacy, numeracy, and social and emotional skills, to progress to higher levels of education, training, and/or engagement in the workforce. 1.Details of Activity

  • 2.Background/Rationale:
  • The IRC/OTL Innovation Programs, EduTank, under the OTL project will work closely with the Innovation ecosystem in Nigeria to ensure seamless integration of innovative methods and systems towards improving learning and teaching experiences in our non-formal learning centers.
  • In this light, EduTank in partnership with the innovation ecosystem within and outside of the IRC, will crowdsource Edtech solutions, incubate and groom these solutions in line with the humanitarian context, and provide funding to implement the ABEP content in these solutions to reach areas that OTL intervene in. These solutions will digitalize and refine the ABEP content to improve the classroom experience, meet learners at the right levels, and improve the teaching capability of educators, making learning fun.
  • These EdTech solutions will complement the Teacher’s Development Team, and align with global and local approved teaching approaches and methodologies.
  • EventsTimelinesMore Information Crowd Sourcing EdTech 10 – 28, 2024Phase 1: The Innovation services will work with the HR team to advertise in public spaces and internal and external networks to crowdsource EdTech Ideas. Existing EdTech partners with the IRC/OTL are encouraged to apply, as special considerations will be given to them, during this solution will be screened based on the following criteria:
  • Startups should be Nigeria-based 'Innovation-driven startups' in the Edtech ecosystem of Nigeria, especially within the humanitarian context.
  • Quality of team composition.
  • startups should either be Female-led, 50% female-owned, or 50% women in top management/leadership positions.
  • Startups with a clear value proposition, who have ideally developed a Minimum Viable Product (MVP), who have demonstrated that they have started to solve the problem with early clients, and are ready to scale up immediately, with customer acceptance.
  • Edtech Startup solutions are sustainable and able to adapt within the humanitarian context.
  • Selected Startups should be willing and ready to work in any of the BAY states in Nigeria.
  • Registration with relevant government agencies in Nigeria.
  • EdTech Startup that meets the above criteria will move to phase 2. (1 week of the selection process to be concluded) Incubation SessionsJuly 8th – 19th 2024Phase 2: In partnership with AirBel, and local and international innovation ecosystems, EduTank will incubate, and groom selected EdTech Partners in a 2weeks (Thrice a week) intensive virtual sessions, with topics that align with the drive for improving education in the non-formal education centers, using low-or-no cost sustainable and innovative technologies. Only key decision makers of the Edtech startups (CEO/CTO/Project Manager) are eligible to attend the the end of the weeks of the incubation session, Only Edtech partners who went through all the sessions will be selected to for FundingJuly 25th – 26th 2024Phase 3:In Partnership with the IRC HR team, EduTank will at the end of the 3weeks of the incubation session, allow selected Edtech partner to pitch their ideas to a panel of judges (EduTank, Airbel, Government Partners). Each judge will review, document, and share their opinion with ONLY the IRC HR team who in turn will gather all reviews, evaluate them, and provide the final selection of the top 1 and/or 2 EdTech Partners to the EduTank team for Edtech partners who went through all the sessions will be selected to the pitch event, Edtech solution will be screened based on the following criteria:
  • Adaptability of solution(s) to the humanitarian context using the ABEP Resources.
  • Human-centered design of solutions that allows the involvement of human perspective and emotion in all steps of the problem-solving process.
  • Sustainability of solution(s) to have state stakeholders adopt and drive an affordable process for a long- life span for innovation in these states.
  • Accessibility of solution(s) to beneficiaries in both urban and rural areas in these states
  • Flexibility of solution(s) to allow for quick and no-cost changes to context, text, languages, designs, etc.
  • Team Composition that allows an inclusive environment and gender balance for all persons, races, PWD, and gender.
  • Startups with a clear value proposition, who have ideally developed a Minimum Viable Product (MVP), and who have demonstrated that they have started to solve the problem with early clients, with customer acceptance.
  • Pitching Team’s Attitude that shows passion, drive, and commitment to supporting the IRC/OTL educational drive for the BAY states, especially within the Humanitarian context.

  • Shortlisted 1 and/or 2 EdTech Partners July 31st - 2nd August 2024 -Contract Signing between PartiesSelected Solution Partner(s) will be presented to the State Up ActivityAugust 2nd – November 29th, 2024August 17th 2024Scale Up Activity to Deployment Area.Selected Solution Partner(s) will be presented with the 1st trench of Payment after an approved Pre-Phase Implementation report is provided to the EduTank Innovation team for evaluation.Subsequent payment will be made as per the contract Note: Funding the 2nd Shortlisted partner will be based on available funding conditions.Innovation Services:The EduTank team in close collaboration with AirBel, and the innovation ecosystem within and outside the IRC will.•Run open innovation processes, , challenges, incubators, and accelerators. Design and run sprints, challenges, incubators, and accelerators that bring together a diverse range of stakeholders (educators, technologists, researchers, entrepreneurs, Organization of Persons with Disabilities (OPD), etc.) •Facilitate learning and knowledge exchange events by conducting experience sharing among EdTech Partners virtually or in person.•Fund Disbursements to successful EdTech solutions, to either pilot or scale up innovative deployment.•Measure, Monitor and evaluate deployment of FocusLearning Facilitators and LearnersPayment of Seed Grant : 40,000,000 NGNPayment of Seed Grant will be done in 4 phases, in completion of stated milestones.Payment will be assigned based on areas of deployment within the BAY Breakdown of Activity: ( MilestoneGrantPre-Phase Implementation report (P-PIR)The P-PIR must contain a detailed work plan which indicates how the EdTech Partner will complete the defined phases of deployment, the timing, key deliverables, and milestones. A timeline or work process flow chart is recommended as it is an effective way of communicating this information and keeping track of the EdTech of the total 1•NFLCs evaluation - Data Report of end users •Users and Centers of implementation with a clear roadmap for service delivery, ensuring that end users experience improved classroom experience and outcome. •Implementation plan and how the solution will impact the End Users. •Design and develop an Interactive ABEP Digital Content that is in line with the Universal Design Learning experience. (English and in the native language that aligns with the immediate environment.) – This item should be in In-progress Status, as at the submission of Phase 1 Report, with evidence. •Train end-users on the use of this technology and ensure that feedback collected is investigated for consideration. •Monitoring end-users and tracking usage of technology and efficiency towards improving teaching outcomes and submit this analysis to the IRC/OTL Innovation Program Team, with access to back-end systems to both review and evaluate the submitted analysis. 20% of the total 2•Using Innovative technologies (software, devices, etc. with both offline and online capabilities) to build the teaching capacity of the learning facilitators. •Using Innovative technologies (software, devices, etc. with both offline and online capabilities) to Improve learning outcomes for learners. •Design and develop an Interactive ABEP Digital Content that is in line with the Universal Design Learning experience. (English and in the native language that aligns with the immediate environment.) – In Completion Status, as at the submission of Phase 2, with evidence. •Monitoring end-users and track usage of technology and efficiency towards improving teaching outcomes and submit this analysis to the IRC/OTL Innovation Program Team, with access to back-end systems to both review and evaluate the submitted analysis. •Submit this interactive ABEP digital content and devices to the IRC/OTL Innovation Program Team, with full access and rights. 30% of the total Closure Report (P-PCR)- Within 1 week after Phase 2 Closes OutPayment upon approval of Endline Report. •Share insights at the OTL 3rd Innovation Event. An infographic, data-driven and Comparative Endline Report shared with the IRC/OTL Innovation Program Team. •Report Approval within (2-3 Weeks) by the IRC/OTL team. 20% of the total grant.
