Lead Retail Buyer

Job Summary

The primary objective of the Lead Retail buyer’s role is to ensure maximum customer satisfaction through the appropriate selection of merchandise that meets the organization's objectives and ensure constant revenue growth and increase in gross margins through the appropriate selection of merchandise assortment, effective procurement strategies and advertising spend recoupment.

Job Description/Requirements


  • Develop and execute an enterprise category assortment plan, procurement, pricing and profit strategy 
  • Partner with key stakeholders to translate assortment plan into a merchandising plan and store-level planograms
  • Manage and review the performance of a large supplier base leveraging effective communication and building relationships that drive engagement and performance
  • Manage a large portfolio of suppliers to source products, strengthen the overall product mix and create a merchandise range that meets the objectives of the organization
  • Negotiate pricing and deals that ensure enterprise competitiveness in the market and set up commercial and service level agreements with suppliers
  • Maintain company’s gross profit (GP’s) and margins per department and category
  • Ensure suppliers adhere to quality, service and best practice initiatives
  • Carry out supplier benchmarking activities and provide market/competitor analysis to key stakeholders
  • Conduct supplier line reviews (to ensure that bestsellers reach their full potential and slow sellers are minimized), assortment analysis, item planning and forecasting
  • Manage supplier performance to optimize sales volume and profitability and resolve supplier queries
  • Leverage data analytics to maximize sales performance, profitability and grow market share and to identify new commercial opportunities
  • Conduct financial analysis and take proactive steps to increase profitability
  • Identify and manage risks within the supply chain
  • Support retail manager and sales team through consistent communication and product updates
  • Plan and deliver market-leading, customer insight-driven marketing promotions and events in conjunction with suppliers
  • Develop and lead a high performing team providing day to day coaching and feedback to ensure they exceed their targets whilst giving them the opportunity to be their best

Minimum Qualifications:

  • A relevant Bachelor’s degree
  • A Master of Business Administration is highly desirable
  • Chartered Institute of Procurement and Supply(CIPS) certification may be beneficial
  • Advanced proficiency using Microsoft office suite

Minimum Experience:

  • Preferably at least 6 years extensive experience as a senior buyer/procurement specialist or category manager in the retail industry 
  • Previous experience in commercial and strategy functions

Knowledge, Skills, and Attributes:

  • Good knowledge of product range in the country
  • Good understanding of the competitive environment
  • Thorough understanding of the retail landscape
  • Thorough understanding of the regulatory landscape in Nigeria wrt procurement and supply chain
  • Strong communication and negotiation skills
  • Excellent interpersonal skills
  • Analytical skills – Able to think creatively, structure complex problems and deliver clear and concise recommendations
  • Results-oriented – Able to consistently deliver against key performance indicators within an evolving landscape
  • Able to write clearly for a range of audiences and deliver oral presentations
  • Team management skills
  • A creative mind with attention to detail
  • A strong work ethic with the ability to multi-task, prioritize and manage time to meet multiple deadlines
