Job Description

  • Verbal Behavior (VB) therapy teaches communication and language. It is based on the principles of Applied Behavior Analysis and the theories of behaviourist B.F. Skinner.
  • VB encourages individuals with autism to learn language by connecting words with their purposes. The student learns that words can help them get the desired objects or results.
  • VB does not focus on words as labels only (cat, car, etc.). Rather, it teaches why we use words and how they are useful in making requests and communicating ideas. The four-word types that the sessions will be focused on are mand, tact, intraverbal and echoic.
Job Duties:
All the requirements of a teaching assistant, but in addition:
  • Providing 1:1 in-home Verbal Behavior therapy
  • Implement academic, social language and behavioural programming using the methodology of ABA for individuals who have developmental disorders, autism spectrum disorders, or emotional/behavioural disorders
  • Create teaching materials that align with academic, social-language and behavioural programming
  • Developing the Individualized Education Plan (IEP) goals
  • Report to supervisor level behaviour analysts & psychologist; and utilize feedback to refine, change and further modify academic and behaviour programs to best meet the individual needs with minimal supervising
  • Ensure the client is in a safe and positive environment at all times
  • Participate in team meetings (In-Person, Email, WhatsApp, Zoom)
  • Maintain a program book and summarize and visually represent academic and behavioural programming weekly
  • Support students during transitions between activities or any break to optimize social interactions and social pragmatic instruction in real-life situations throughout the school day using the methodology of ABA
  • Take data during the session while targeting different skills related to social skills, play skills, basic life, etc.
  • Ensure the client is in a safe and positive environment at all times
  • Participate in team meetings (In-Person, Email, WhatsApp, Zoom)  
  • Desire to achieve positive outcomes for clients
  • Represent Xela Care in our mission positively in all interactions
  • These positions may require extended day services
  • Responsible for implementing “other job-related duties” as assigned by the supervisor or Principal
  • Other duties as needed.
Job Requirement:
  • Previous experience working with individuals and children with Autism Spectrum Disorders, Developmental Delay or Emotional/Behavioral Disorders in an educational or private setting.
  • Training and experience using the tenants and techniques of Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) is required. Familiarity with Language Arts, Mathematics and Content Area knowledge base relevant to the educational level of the student is required.
  • Verbal, written language, technology skill and interpersonal communication skill to support communication among team members, with program lead and parents is required.
Work Environment & Physical Requirements:
  • You will be working with a toddler so it’s important to be able to sit on the floor, stoop, stand, walk, and run
