We are looking for an innovator, capable of recognizing and advancing solutions that continually increase the value and appeal of the magazine for its numerous readers. The qualified candidate will act as a change agent in an increasingly popular market, ensuring that our publishing program is well-positioned to succeed in a competitive marketplace. As the manager, you will oversee the quality and timeliness of the publications process and ensure that workflow and published output reflects best practice and meets current standards of ethics integrity, as well as recommend and implement strategy for the program.
He/she will support and advise the magazine’s publication committee, serving as their primary liaison. In collaboration with colleagues in marketing and finance departments, the manager is responsible for a substantial ROI to the society. Ideally, he/she will have an exceptional level of market awareness and engagement within the online publishing communities. Travel is required as necessary to fulfill the role. The manager reports to the executive director of the magazine and serves on the management team. The position is located at Victoria Island, Lagos.
Key responsibilities and requirements include:
Budget responsibility for the publications of the magazine including targets for growth, as measured by online followership, visits and sales.
Develop, launch, lead and champion new contents as directed by strategic plans
Provide support to and serve as key liaison with the Publications Committee
Collaborate with the magazine editors on a range of topics including ethics, quality, presentation and marketing of magazine content, strategies for improving impact
Attend, organize and prepare materials for the magazine’s editorial board meetings and Publications
Lead by example, setting the highest standards for staff and colleagues
Work collaboratively with the executive team towards strategic goals set by the organization
Understand the roles of the other departments in the organization and how each functions
Provide intelligence and strong direction to the marketing team for optimal magazine promotion
Oversee publications ethics policy and procedure and support decisions regarding ethical infractions
Negotiate successful contracts with vendors that support the publications process and output, and oversee the relationships
Develop and launch new publications as directed by strategic plans
Minimum 3 years of senior management responsibility in online publishing
Experience in working for or with online publications
Exceptional communication and presentation skills
Financial management and budgeting expertise • Passion for the online publishing process
High-level experience in managing the following areas: editorial acquisition, new publication startups/launches, digital production processes, contract negotiations, budgets
Understanding of the online community needs and priorities
Proven track record in working collaboratively with authors and editors
Proven track record in contributing to organizational vision and implementing strategy
The energy and leadership necessary to facilitate a positive working environment in a high caliber publication outfit with high caliber, collaborative staff and volunteer leadership
