Job Description:  

The Expert in Agricultural Economy and Inclusive Business Models will be working for AFC Agriculture and Rnance Consultants which implements the project Green Innovation Centres for Agriculture and the Food Sector (GIAE) in Nigeria on behalf of Deutsche Gesellschaft kir International Zusammenarbeit (GIZ). 

The overall objective of the project is to support innovations in smallholder farm businesses and up- and downstream agribusinesses in selected rural regions in order to improve income for smallholder farming enterprises, create employment and enhance regional food supply. The project targets agricultural smallholders, their associations, trading and processing enterprises. 

The value chains covered by the project, namely maize, rice, cassava and Irish potato, have been selected due to their market and innovation potential. The project has different intervention areas. One key intervention areas is to make use of innovations to build inclusive business models, creating win-win" scenarios. Within each value chain, the focus is on inclusive business models in which local processing and marketing companies cooperate with the farmers, as leverage for inclusive results. Experience shows that, starting out from the basis of market potential and downstream absorptive capacity, smallholders can be integrated into the value chains of the agriculture and food sector within the framework of inclusive business models. Relationships between smallholders and processing trading or storage companies are shaped in such a way that cooperation between the actors is reliable and is of mutual benefit (inclusive business models). 

The Expert in Agricultural Economy and Inclusive Business Models will work closely with the AFC GIAE Project Team Leader, all AFC GIAE technical advisors and GIZ GIAE staff. 

 

The Expert in Agricultural Economy and Inclusive Business Models will work closely with the AK GIAE Project Team Leader, all AK GIAE technical advisors and GIZ GIAE staff. 

 

 

Responsibilities: 

  • Assessment of existing/proposed business models between corporate sector and smallholders and identification of measures to improve on inclusiveness and sustainability of the model
  • Identification and support of the initiation, replication and up-scaling of successful inclusive business relations (inclusive business models) between smallholders and processing, trading or storage companies that can be replicated in the selected value chains.
  • Identification of sales opportunities in selected value chains and matching this demand with the supply side.
  • Identification of information and capacity building needs of Government Ministries, Departments and Agencies, private sector, NGOs and other identified stakeholders relating to their role in improving the said value chains.
  • Capacity development, training and coaching of multipliers that work for government and private sector service providers and extension institutions in order to enhance the broad-based and effective communication and dissemination of innovations. 
  • Identification, planning preparation, budgeting conduct, monitoring and documentation of project activities primarily related to inclusive business models but also to other areas of project interventions. 
  • Drafting of ToR of short-term consultancies and provision of technical assistance to consultants in carrying out their assignment.
  • Knowledge management collection, processing and distribution of relevant information, monitoring of communication and interaction between government institutions, NGOs and society through observation/analyses of media, direct dialogue, participation in meetings and seminars, etc. Development and maintaining of effective communication and information between all involved staff of the AK project team and GIZ as well as partnering institutions and stakeholders. 

Key Technical Profile Required:  

  • The applicant has to have an agro-economical or agricultural background.
  • The candidate should have working experience in agro-business (or at least in any other kind of related private business) and preferably in managing business relationships between the company and smallholders.
  • Working experience in the development cooperation is a plus. He/she should have good knowledge in at least 2 the 4 cropsNCs (maize, rice, Irish potato, cassava) selected by the Project. 
  • Minimum Qualification: MBA/ MSc 
  • The applicant has to have an agro-economical or agricultural background. The candidate should have working experience in agro-business (or at least in any other kind of related private business) and preferably in managing business relationships between the company and smallholders. 
  • Working experience in the development cooperation is a plus. He/she should have good knowledge in at least 2 the 4 cropsNCs (maize, rice, Irish potato, cassava) selected by the Project. 
  • He/she has to be skilled and experienced in the assessment of inclusive business models to understand the value proposition of the various value chain actors and able to identify corrective measures to improve on. He/she is very familiar with the principles of successful inclusive business models and knows how to practically transfer them into the respective local context to balance risk, responsibilities, and benefits along the value chain while not undermining competitiveness. He/she is able to design, promote and monitor implementation and scaling-up of sound business cases between corporates (from big to cottage level) and smallholders.
