Oilers lubricate and clean the various parts to keep the motors functioning properly. The main duty of an oiler is maintaining, cleaning and, at times, operating ship engine parts, including blowers, compressors, motors, gears, ejectors and other equipment. They are responsible for operating the lubricant filtering and purifying equipment and keeping logs of the oiling.


Duties and responsibilities

  • Following International/National Rules & Regulations, relevant Shipping Industry Standards and Guidelines and Company Policies and Procedures.
  • Assisting the Officer on Watch as required.
  • Performing maintenance/repair work in accordance with the 2nd Engineer’s instructions.
  • Ensuring safe working practices are followed at all times. 
  • Reporting Accidents, Near Misses and Non-Conformances to a Senior Officer and assisting with investigations into the cause.
  • Suggesting changes to improve the Safety Management System.
  • Attending Safety Committee Meetings as and when required.   



  • Knowledge of standard engineering watches.
  • Ability to maintain and operate the ship’s auxiliary machinery equipment.
  • Knowledge of fueling boats / launches and assisting in ship fueling operations.
  • Skill in computer, oral, and written communication.



  • Minimum of One (1) year experience
  • Minimum of Secondary School Certificate Examination (S.S.C.E)
  • Basic Mandatories, Certificate of Competency (C.O.C), Engine Room Watch Keeping
  • Knowledge and maintenance of GM Engines
  • Must have a recognized Seaman’s discharge book and a valid offshore medical certificate


Physical requirements

All vessel positions can be physically demanding. Bending, climbing, repetitive motion, and heavy lifting are requirements of most vessel positions. Every crew member works varied shifts, which average 12 hours a day, every day.


Supervisory Responsibility

This position has no supervision responsibilities.
