How The 2009 ASUU StrikeTransformed 3 Lives. The Jobberman Story.

Since the ASUU strike resurfaced on the first day of July 2013; undergraduates, parents of undergraduates, well-wishers and the Nigerian populace are once more distraught at the maddening situation of education in Nigeria. As it appears, students who are at the receiving end of the ASUU/FG rift are tired of counting the days, idle and have accepted their sorry fate; even more, they are uncertain about what the future holds.

Jobberman.com, Nigeria’s foremost jobs website and one of the top 10 Tech Startups in Africa was founded during an industrial strike in August 2009, 3 young students thrived on the opportunity of having no schoolwork to build a website. That jobs website is Jobberman.
The Jobberman story helps appreciate how these strikes can be used to become advantages for students rather than pose a threat to their aspirations. The founders of jobs portal share their story below;

“It all started with three young men: Opeyemi Awoyemi, Olalekan Olude and Ayodeji Adewunmi, all university students. We shared the same interest in the Internet space and started Jobberman from the Obafemi Awolowo University campus during the Industrial Strike Action by Nigerian Academic Staff Union (ASUU) of August 2009.

We agreed to work on the Jobs space for a number of reasons including: a low capital requirement (considering that we were students at the time), huge market opportunity (labour force of ~45m) and superior product differentiation.

Jobberman at inception was financed from a pool of funds created from our stipends. To kick off the business, we needed to get a company registered. We approached a leading legal luminary and incorporated the business as a Limited Liability Company. And we set out on that journey waist deep.

The Ongoing ASUU strike has presented itself again, another opportunity for Nigerian students to hone skills early enough in the workplace and gain competitive advantage in the labour market. Do something while you look forward to resuming school. Take this as a seed in your hand – time can never be replaced when lost, what are you doing with yours now?”
Jobberman is the biggest jobs website in West Africa with over 800,000 users and 14,000 companies providing the latest jobs in Nigeria. It is headquarters is located in Lekki Lagos, Nigeria.
