Ways to stay focused when fatigue strikes at work
In between daily tasks, projects at work and your own personal goals, fatigue is bound to creep in and threaten to upset your well-laid plans.Things could get worse when it dawns on you that the tiredness persists in the face of so much to do and you have no idea on how to get around it.
There are a couple of things you can do to turn the situation around. Some of the things we will discuss in subsequent lines will help restore your productivity and put a smile on your face.
1. Rethink your To-do list
At this point, you should take a close look at your To-do list and reprioritise tasks in order of urgency and importance.

What this list does is that it helps you prioritise your tasks from the most urgent to the least urgent tasks. The earlier you get the tougher tasks out of the way, the more productive you will become as you gradually work your way into the smaller tasks.
2. Don’t work more than 45 minutes at a stretch
When you begin to notice signs of tiredness, you should schedule your work in such a way that you get off your desk for a 5-minute break every 45 minutes. This break gives you time to rejuvenate. To achieve this, consider using a timer, reminders or installing BreakTimer on your laptop to set up the reminders that you need to take a break.
3. Shut down email and phone notifications
Keeping your email and phone notifications on when you are tired is not a good idea. Instead, you should set aside a specific time to check emails and phone notifications. The danger of leaving your notifications on is that it will constantly distract you from tasks you should be working on, thus, you become less productive.
4. Stretch it out
Before the tiredness kicks into full gear, you should stretch out your body. Since you are at work, one way to go about this is to get up from your chair and stand up straight, stretch your neck, tuck your chin to your chest, stretch your shoulder, stretch your feet, stretch your back and chest and stretch your forearm and hand. When done effectively, this stretching routine increases the flow of oxygen to your brain. This gives you more energy and this, in turn, shoots up your productivity.
5. Work outside your workspace
Do you have a coffee shop close to your office or is your lounge or eating area conducive enough to work from? Then, go for it. Working in a new space at work increases your concentration, productivity and creativity. However, just before you leave, consider taking your headphones along with you because you never know how noisy your destination might get.
6. Increase your water consumption to stay hydrated
Usually, dehydration goes hand in hand with fatigue, and sometimes it could be the cause of fatigue. Your body needs plenty of water.
Fatigue remains one of the first major signs of dehydration. A loss of just 1 to 2 percent of body weight as water is enough to impair thinking. If this is allowed to turn into full-blown dehydration, it could cause an imbalance in electrolytes like sodium and potassium, which aid muscles and heart function.
7. Working while on your feet
Do you know what happens when you work while standing on your feet? It allows you slip into a good mood and increases your brain power. When you work with a standing desk for some time, you cut down your likelihood of experiencing fatigue.
It is important not to try to stand in one position for long periods of time. Instead, it’s a good idea to constantly be moving around from time to time.
For best results, you should have both sitting and standing options available in your workspace and for you to alternate between the two positions. You should never stand for more than one hour at a time and for no more than half of your day (or four hours of your eight hour day). From time to time, consider taking little breaks or going for short walks, even if it’s just around the office.

8. Listen to a different kind of music
If you get tired at work, you should listen to a different kind of music other than the ones you are used to. According to a study from the University of Missouri, music can make you happier, less tired and much more productive.
9. Work close to a window
When you work close to a window and go as far as opening up the blinds, you are doing your body and mind a huge favour. Working in natural light increases the job performance of employees.
10. Try using essential oils
It’s perfectly fine to have drinks and snacks on your table but consider adding essential oils to the items on your table. A good example of this peppermint oil. You can rub some of the oil on your wrists so you can inhale the smell as frequently as you need to. The smell of the oil boosts alertness, gives a cooling sensation and has a calming effect on the body, which can relieve sore muscles when used topically.
Essential oils have a number of uses and benefits including relieving headaches, improving mental focus and boosts energy.
