Summary

Reporting to Manager, Operations on all matters related to the SMS. The master has overriding authority and is responsible for taking immediate action and requesting whatever assistance he believes necessary, when dealing with situations related to safety and pollution prevention.  No instructions or guidance imposed by shore side management should distract him from this responsibility and he must not wait for approval to act.  

 

Duties and responsibilities

Safeguarding the lives of his officers and crew and ensuring they are well prepared for emergency situations,

Protecting the marine environment and the vessel and its cargo

Ensuring continual compliance with all relevant International/National Rules and Regulations, Shipping Industry Standards and Guidelines and the Company’s Policies and Procedures, 

Planning, executing and evaluating performance of Emergency Response Drills/Exercises.

Ensuring the vessel remains in a seaworthy condition, all statutory certificates are up to date and notifying the Company when surveys are required.

Safe navigation and efficient organization of his ship and for keeping Bridge Watch as and when required. 

Ensuring his vessel is manned by suitably qualified and experienced seamen.

Establishing Bridge Watch schedules and Engine Watch schedules in close co-operation with the Chief Engineer. 

Ensuring all newly embarked Officers and crew are properly trained on all safety matters and on the operation of relevant machinery/equipment. 

Issuing Master’s Standing Orders and maintaining the Master’s Daily Order Book, ensuring all instructions are given in a clear and understandable manner. 

Ensuring vessel’s waste is disposed of in the correct manner, arranging for reception facilities as and when required. 

Ensuring all shipboard personnel understand and follow the Company’s Policies and Procedures and encouraging them to put forward ideas for improvements. 

Promoting safe working practices and ensuring health and hygiene conditions are of the highest possible standards.

Monitoring the execution of the vessel’s Scheduled Inspection/Maintenance System, Monitoring all arrangements for medical treatment 

Maintaining discipline aboard the vessel by ensuring only bona fide visitors are permitted aboard the vessel.

Monitoring all ship to shore communications

Monitoring the provision and use of ship stores 

Reporting Accidents, Near Misses and identified Non-Conformances to the DPA, assisting with investigations into the cause and suggesting Corrective and Preventive Action.

Ensuring Corrective and Preventive Actions are implemented aboard his vessel 

Ensuring vessel’s documentation and SMS records are maintained in accordance with Company procedures 

Scheduling, planning and chairing monthly Safety Committee Meetings and ensuring a report is completed and copy is forwarded to the DPA. Please note:  If the Master is incapacitated the Chief Officer will assume command. A note of this must be recorded in the Bridge Log Book and the Company must be informed as soon as possible   

 

Competencies 

Hand-eye coordination, strong communication skills, mechanical ability, visual and hearing ability

Computer skills: Navigational software, facilities management software

Technical skills: Marine communication system operation, ability to operate a ship's mechanical equipment

 

Qualifications

Minimum of five (5) years’ experience

Minimum of Secondary School Certificate Examination (S.S.C.E)

Basic Mandatories, Advance Mandatories, Certificate of Competency (C.O.C), Radar Simulator Training, Global Maritime Distress and Safety System (GMDSS) Cert., Bridge Resources 

Must have a recognized Seaman’s discharge book and a valid offshore medical certificate

 

Physical requirements

All vessel positions can be physically demanding. Bending, climbing, repetitive motion, and heavy lifting are requirements of most vessel positions. Every crew member works varied 

shifts, which average 12 hours a day, every day.
