The George Hotel is a 61 bedroom, luxury boutique hotel based in the affluent suburb of Ikoyi on Lagos’s Victoria Island. The George aims to be the premier hotel in all of Lagos and set the benchmark for Nigerian hospitality standards.



General Manager

The Sales Manager is responsible for, and manages all aspects of the hotel’s active and aggressive sales and marketing team initiatives, and maximizes the overall revenue of the hotel by directing the revenue generating activities in accordance with the sales and marketing business plan. The job incumbent should be active, proactive, analytical, and should achieve results in every respect. All work will be in line with the hotel’s guidelines, group corporate guidelines and service concepts.




  • Maintain and update client database
  • Handling correspondence
  • Filing and keeping filing cabinets in good order
  • General administration
  • Handling telephone enquiries efficiently
  • Receive invoices for advertising and marketing and arrange payment
  • Ordering of collateral
  • Updating hotel database
  • Hotel Site Inspections with prospective clients
  • Liaising with the media for photo shoots, editorials, advertisements
  • Sending out and following up on STO contracts
  • Coordination of images and text for tour operator brochures
  • Attending to brochure requests
  • Updating information on Sales & Catering
  • Preparing Sales packs
  • Recording Sales & Marketing meeting minutes
  • Designing e-cards and adverts
  • Liaising with clients/suppliers
  • Ensure all hotels in the region carry brochure stock of the hotel and vice versa
  • Source Sales opportunities for the hotel within the region and forward sales leads with the hotel employed at being one’s primary focus
  • Assistance with site inspections
  • Communication of upcoming specials, deals and events to prospective clients.
  • Handling of sponsorships, prizes and donations
  • Communication of special deals, upcoming events to clients
  • Co-ordination of local and international sales trips
  • Achieves sales goals by supervising sales staff
  • Implements strategies to improve market penetration
  • Achieves budgeted goals by executing sales activities within assigned market segment.
  • Monitors call productivity and revenue goals for each sales person by tracking results
  • Improves call productivity by counseling sales staff on appropriate selling techniques
  • Increases sales volume and profitability by formulating and executing projects for all market areas as stated in the business plan
  • Analyses sales statistics to formulate profitability
  • Reviews market analysis to determine client needs, occupancy potential, desired rates, etc.
  • Assists in the development of annual sales goals
  • Maintains effective correspondence
  • Assists in the completion of reports
  • Develops data and recommends programs to meet clients’ needs
  • Prepares proposals that are geared to maximize profit while satisfying guest needs
  • Solicits files on a timely basis to confirm business
  • Utilizes appropriate sales techniques
  • Uses outside sales calls to solicit existing and new guests
  • Meets overall budgeted sales and profit margins by soliciting, evaluating, selling, and confirming business
  • Qualifies prospective leads as to profitability
  • Negotiates with clients to achieve maximum profit while satisfying client needs
  • Coordinates transient and group room commitments to insure proper market mix
  • Enhances the hotel’s community image and stays abreast of competition, new
  • development, and sales methods and techniques in the hotel industry
  • Provides feedback to General Manager on changing market conditions and trends in competition
  • Directs all sales activities for all staff with sales opportunities to ensure that objectives are achieved in the Sales & Marketing business plan
  • Conducts on-site client inspections and entertainment weekly
  • Communicates guests’ requests to all departments in an effective and timely manner
  • Develops plans, special sales & marketing activities and promotions
  • Attends Brand sales & marketing blitz, and/or trade shows in key market cities to develop new business and to contact established clients in these cities.
  • Communicates with Front Office Manager all group VIP’s for appropriate treatment
  • Attends major travel functions and trade shows to promote the hotel
  • Seek business opportunities for other hotels within the Region while conducting sales calls (primary focus being hotel employed at)
  • Thorough research to be conducted during customer meetings in order to avoid information duplication sourcing
  • Sales leads to be sent to General Manager of hotel where opportunity exists
  • Monthly sales lead list to be maintained and sent to hotel sales team



Follows all applicable laws and corporate standards and guidelines



  • Ensures that all potential and real hazards are reported and reduced immediately
  • Fully understands the hotel’s fire, emergency and procedures
  • Ensures that emergency procedures are practised and enforced to provide for the security and safety of guests and employees
  • Ensures that all employees within own department work in a safe manner that does not harm or injure self or others
  • Stimulates and encourages a general awareness of health and safety in tasks and activities managed within the department
  • Ensures the safety of the people and property within the premises by applying hotel regulations, and adhering to existing laws and regulations
  • Anticipates possible and probable hazards and conditions and either corrects them or take action to prevent them from happening
  • Ensures that the highest standards of personal hygiene, dress, uniform, appearance, body language and conduct of hotel employees is maintained by all employees in the department



  • Attends meetings and training required by the General Manager
  • Maintains proper flow of information within the hotel by reviewing sales work file of assigned accounts
  • Assists colleagues to perform similar or related jobs when necessary
  • Ensures guest satisfaction by attending to their requests and inquires courteously and efficiently
  • Accepts flexible work schedule necessary for uninterrupted service to hotel guests and stakeholders
  • Maintains own working area, and materials clean, tidy and in good shape; reports defective materials and equipment to appropriate person within the hotel
  • Continuously seeks to endeavour and improve the department’s efficient operation, and knowledge of own job function
  • Is well updated on, and possesses solid knowledge of the following:
  • Hotel fire and emergency procedures
  • Hotel health and safety policies and procedures
  • Hotel facilities and nearby sights of interest and importance (i.e. hospitals, stations, tourist sights)
  • Hotel standards of operation and departmental procedures
  • Current licensing relating to own department and to the hotel
  • Accepted methods of payment by the hotel




  • Customer and Personal Service: Knowledge of principles and processes for providing customer and personal services. This includes customer needs assessment, meeting quality standards for services, and evaluation of customer satisfaction
  • Sales and Marketing: Knowledge of principles and methods for showing, promoting, and selling products or services. This includes marketing strategy and tactics, product demonstration, sales techniques, and sales control systems
  • English Language: Knowledge of the structure and content of the English language including the meaning and spelling of words, rules of composition, and grammar
  • Food Production: Knowledge of techniques and equipment for planting, growing, and harvesting food products (both plant and animal) for consumption, including storage/handling techniques
  • Working irregular and long hours on both weekends and evenings are commonly required
  • Travel locally, regionally, and nationally to meet with prospective guests and other sales managers to discuss business
  • Transfers from one office to another are also common in this career, so hotel sales managers should be comfortable with relocating if needed.

  • Bachelors’ Degree in Business Administration or any Social Science discipline
  • At least five years’ hospitality work experience three of which should be in managerial position(s)
  • Basic food hygiene
